I'm trying to trace back records of the Atkinson family that lived in Hunslet Leeds area. John born about 1826? and Sarah Atkinson lived in Hunslet. His son Richard and wife Elizabeth emigrated to Australia on the Hesperus 1883 and landed in Adelaide with three children.Anyone able to help?

Hello and welcome to FHUK

We will do our best to find some details on the family for you.

The UK-based researchers will be on-line a bit later.

Regards,

Dave

If the marriage is in Hunslet but birth for a John W is before the marriage. There are three other marriages in other parts of WRY. Need confirmation.

Now I see the problem :) 187 x John born in Yorkshire 1826 +/- 5 years

A dozen marriages for a John & Sarah in WRY 1843-1851.

This needs someone with more resources.

Hi
I thought this was going to be easy as W yorks records are on line, but Richard's children do not seem to be recorded

I agree with Daveham on the 1881 census and births, except the third child would not be a Walter. I also agree that a possible marriage could be Elizabeth Horsfall. It could however also be Elizabeth Hirst Jun qtr 1876 Huddersfield ref 9a 543, as Elizabeth was born there.

I can only find one set of parents for Richard. 1861 RG9-3368-78-12.

1871 RG10-4512-82-18; all except Sarah born Hunslet
John Atkinson 44 Shpkeeper
Sarah 43 Beeston
Richard 19 Joiner
John Wm 17 Cloth wharehouseman
Frederick 15 Prov.merchants ass
Mary 13
Walter 11
Elizabeth 7
Thomas 5
Annie 1

1861 RG9-3368-78-12. all the same up to Walter but 10 years younger. John is a Flaxmill overlooker

Hello dave,

It soon became obvious it was not as easy as it first appeared. I was expecting to find the birth reg of the third child but was surprised to find only more named Walter. So either the 3rd was not born Hunslet or birth was not registered.

I found the Sep Q 1875 marriage and later realised it might not be the right one considering place of birth for Elizabeth as per census and date of reg for son John W.

Thanks for your efforts so far. It's exciting to read your responses.
More info that might assist...Richard Atkinson was married to Elizabeth Horsefield and they had several children that we know of... John, frederick, Mary, Walter, Elizabeth, Thomas, Annie, and Albert.
Richards' father was John Atkinson (1826 - 1881) married to Sarah Goodison (1828- 1884). His father was Thomas Atkinson married to Mary Ann ????? and that's where it becomes quite foggy.
What are the chances that Atkisnon Road, Hunslett beside the old Hunslett Mill are connected to the Atkinson Family that I am chasing info on?
And does anyone know what an 'overlooker' in a flax mill might do...is that a term for foreman back in those days?
The Atkinson family migrated to Australia sposored thru an Emigration Scheme...how would the family have learned about that scheme and waht was involved for them to take up the offer? I think it may have been a scheme that many from Leeds may have taken up???
Looking forward to more.....
Thanks and Cheers
Ian

Yes - Overlooker Overseer or foreman esp. in textile mills. Info HERE

Agents went around promoting the assisted scheme. Some info HERE and HERE

It's possible the road is named after an ancestor.

Thanks for the responses so far re Atkinson family roots...
It was Richard Atkinson(1851 -1934) and his wife Elizabeth Horsefall who emigrated to Australia in 1813 with their family.
The father John Atkinson(1826 – 1881) and his wife Sarah Goodison lived in Hunslett.
His father Thomas Atkinson ( 1790???) and his wife Mary Ann lived in same area.
It’s the last two generations and any before this time is where I am focusing my attention.
I am also keen to follow up on the Hosefall and Goodison families from the same area in Leeds.

Could you also please clarify what the reference nos refer to..eg Atkinson Walter Hunslet eg 9b 296.
For information on John Atkinson....1871 RG10-4512-82-18 .
What do they mean and how can I use that information...?
Cheers for now Ian McConchie

9b 296 Hunslet plus the date is the GRO ref number which you would quote to buy a certificate
RG10-4512-82-18 is the census ref. RG10 is for 1871; 4512 is the Piece number; 82 the folio number and 18 for the page.
