Hi Christine,

Most librarys in Australia have a Genealogy room where you can search microfische for births, deaths & marriages. I am going in later this week to look up some things so will see what I can find for you.

In the mean time you could try the National Archives. Each state has one but not every thing is on line. The NSW one is supposed to be good. Try the site below. I haven't used it myself but have heard others say it is useful.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au

Will get back to you later.
By the way do you know her parents names & the name of her husband?

Cheers Peta

Hi Christine,

I did get into my local library but could only find the Sth Aust BMD.:( I'm going to go to the state library next week so will see if they have a better supply of interstate listings. I have a friend in N.Z who seems to be able to access BMD for all Aust states. If I have no luck I'll in Adelaide I'll see what she can find. Typical that I have to ask overseas to find our own info:2fun:

Do you have her husbands name, if I can find the marriage it might narrow down the search area. As it will give her age.

Get back to you.

Cheers Peta

Lillian Cohn's husband was John Grant. I think they were married in 1893 at Southern Cross W.A.
I was told that Liilian was born in Cobar, N.S.W. abt 1874. Still can't find her.
I like to check on what people tell me.
Thank You. Christine.

Hi Christine,

Well no luck so far. My state library has the same link for the NSW site. It looks like it is the only state with online records. Found nothing there. I looked in Vic, QLD & WA as well & could get no matches no matter where I went. I ran out of time today, but I'll go back & try again as soon as I can book in. I couldn't even get a match for her marriage.:'(

I haven't given up yet. Sorry it's been so fruitless so far.

Will get back to you again

Cheers Peta

Peta.
I found her marriage in the W.A. Pioneer Index.
Lillian Amelia May Cohn Married John Grant. At Southern Cross,w.a. in 1893.
Reg. No. 222. I have found a death, (If it is her) at Coolgardie, w.a. In 1906. Still no Birth. If you can't find it,I'll have to send for her Marriage certificate, to see if her birth date is on it.

Hi Christine,

I found the same marriage ( at long last). I still haven't been able to find any mention of her birth or her parents in any listing so far. I tried looking under different variants but still no matches.
Her fathers name is unusual & I thought that might help to find her, but no such luck. It could be transcribed wrong. My ggf had an unusual name & every listing I have found for him from his marriage through to his kids births, wifes death & his own death, his name is spelt a different way on each one.

I'll keep looking for you, but for the life of me I can't work out where they are yet.

Will get back to you

Cheers Peta

Peta.
Yes I know what you mean. Isidore James Knight Cohn has been Isidor, Isadore.
I Am Still looking, I've been looking under the surname Cohen, Because his chidren who were born in Victoria before he came to NSW, were born as Cohen. Isidore, changed his name to Cohn when he came to NSW. He is a very confusing man.

Hi Christine,

I found the same death you did for Lillian I think it is safe to assume it is the same person. She has been so elusive. I also found a possible death for her husband.

John. A. Grant Coolgardie 1918 Registration No 45

It's a pity these records for WA don't give a lot of detail. Such as age.

Going by the yr of birth you have she would have been 19 when she married ( which is not unusual) & 32 when she died. Haven't been able to find a birth for John Grant in WA . I did a random search for children but came up blank so far.

Will keep plodding & let you know if anything pops up.

Cheers Peta

Hi Peta.
I have John Grant's death as 1946. I also have 4 of John and Lillian Grant's children. One of them was my grandmother Leah Theresa, born 1904 Kanowno W.A. I wish they would have talked about their family, it would make all this easier.
I'm sure Lillian was born in Cobar, N.S.W.

Hi Christine,

Good you have John Grants death. I was hopeful when I saw the Town was the same as Lillians that it was connected some how.

I have sent an email to my friend in NZ to see if she can find something in the records there. She often does look up for me when I get stumped. I asked to look at the micro fische in the library here & they looked at me as if I had horns. Seems that they think it's all on computer now so there could be no mistake with the transcribing.

Fingers crossed for something good from NZ

Cheers Peta

Hi Christine,

Finally heard back from my friend. Sorry it has taken so long. She had some family committments.

No Joy on Lillian I am afraid. But I'll give you what she did find (which you prob already have)

Isadore James Knight Cohn married Annie Emily Amelia Harding in 1861 in Victoria ( she didn't mention a town)

The children she found are as follows

Lea Sophia B1860 Sand, Victoria
Edward Victor B1864 Cale, Victoria
Theresa Augusta B1867 St Andrews, Victoria
Flora Bertha B1869 Collingwood, Victoria
William Isadore B 1872 Collingwood, Victoria

After that they seem to disappear. The only child she found in NSW was

Silverton.C.Cohen B1884 Newtown NSW. He died as Silvester.C.Cohen in 1884 also in Newtown NSW.

She said there is a huge gap between William 1872 & Silvester 1884 & she's not sure where the registrations are.

The only thing I can think of to do now is to contact the NSW Registry Office directly to see if they can shed any light on where the registrations are for the yrs between 1872 & 1884. Maybe they were lost or destroyed.

Sorry things haven't turned up. But I'll still keep an eye out for things. Something might turn up somewhere.

Cheers Peta

Peta. I have come up with John Grant and Lillian Amelia May Cohn's Children. Their two sons were killed in France, WW1. there were two daughters as well. I knew of one, who was my grandmother.
I found Another child to Isidore James Knight Cohn, and Annie Emily Amelia. She was born 1874 in Victoria. There is also a Jacob Cohn born 1861 in Victoia, but i don't know if he is Isidore's son or not. I have no parents names.
Still can't find a birth for Lillian Amelia May Cohn. I went to Newcastle Library, no records in N.S.W.

hi Christine,

Lillian is really elusive. The State Library in Sydney might have more comprehensive records than the Newcastle one. My local library here has very minimal records. The State Library in Adelaide much better for finding things. I am hoping to get to the National Archives in the next couple of weeks. I'm hoping they might carry BMD records as well. So will keep looking. She has to turn up somewhere other than her marriage as a first sighting.

Cheers Peta

The Cohn's Left Victoria, and headed to NSW, then to WA.
I have sent for Lillian's Death Certificate, just to confirm her birth.
Thank You Heaps. Christine.
