Trying to find my gt gt grandparents
My gt grandfather's details :
AYNSLEY Michael
b. 20 Dec 1835 Monkwearmouth, Durham, Sunderland England
d. 2 Sep 1901 Karoro Greymouth N.Z.

married 1 Sep 1872 St Paul's Anglican Church Ross N.Z.

GRANT Justina Anastasia
b. 12 Jul 1851 Belfast Ireland
d. 14 Feb 1929 Blackball West Coast N.Z.

Conflicting details re his parents and i can find nothing except his death certificate, which says William is his father, mothers name unknown.
Family tree sites i have seen say his parents were John 1804-Unknown and Isabella 1800-1843

After further looking it appears elsewhere John died in Whitburn, Durham December 1839
Also maybe Isabella was born 1806 and not 1800. Her given name was ISABELLA YOUNG NELSON

I don't know much about the NZ certificates but would their marriage cert. have his parents names? If so it might be more reliable as he himself would have given the names whereas a death cert. information is only as good as the informant knew so sometimes errors occur.

Sorry i have to get to work. But no, none of their 19 surviving children have Nelson in their name,, BUT, first daughter born, was named Mary Isabella. I need to fully join up to Ancestry i think to be able to access records such as baptism, census. Have joined part of it i thought i was going to be able to access, but i can't.

Yes all i have is family notes, sorry. I need to get together $ to join up fully with Ancestry
These notes are what i am going thru which also questions John or his brother William
as being Michaels dad......
"" AYNSLEY Michael
b. 20 Dec 1835 Monwearmouth, Durham, Sunderland, England
d. 2 Sep 1901 Greymouth bd. Karoro Cemetery Greymouth N.Z.

Father: William AYNSLEY
Mother: Mary Morrison (?)

The earliest official reference to Michael Aynsley we have is the 1841 Census taken in Durham, England. Of Monkwearmouth, the census records:

Michael AYNSLEY aged 10 years, apprentice shipwright. ""

1841 he would not have been 10 !! which all further notes do not mention and the contributing writers - my dads cousins- have since passed away.
I guess i left it too late in life to start searching for answers and whether we are or not related to the John Aynsley of Aynsley China in England

ps Michael and Justina had a daughter they named Mary Isabella, and a son named John Morrison. I am presuming one of them is named after aunt/uncle :)

Where does the ...

b. 20 Dec 1835 Monwearmouth, Durham, Sunderland, England

If born 1835 then I have not yet found him in 1841 and 1851 census if 1860 arrival in NZ is correct ??

from family notes (more added below) and his headstone
The earliest official reference to Michael Aynsley we have is the 1841 Census taken in Durham, England. Of Monkwearmouth, the census records:

Michael AYNSLEY aged 10 years, apprentice shipwright.
The occupation of apprentice shipwright seems a likely beginning for one who later became a sailor and ship's mate or sea Captain. Checks with the Durham County Archivist for the Baptism Register for Monkwearmouth (St Peter's) for the period 1830-1840 produced a blank.
There is a discrepancy in data about the age Jack Aynsley says his father (Michael) was when he jumped ship in New Zealand (25years) and the number of years shown on his death certificate that he lived in New Zealand, -that he had lived in NZ 39 years, making him 64 years when he died, yet his death certificate shows he was 66 years, which is confirmed by other data. Perhaps he came in 1862, and was 27 years.(Source: Kel Connelly, who holds a photocopy of the Durham Census record, and a letter from the Durham County Archivist)

Thank you both for your input,, its given me more ideas on what sort of things i need to be looking for. Time to get ready for work again
