Hi,
I am trying to find out more about Port Adelaide in Sth Australia as I have recently found that there are many Members of the Bampton family, Descended from two brothers & their children in the 1840/50s.
I have very little info on Adelaide to date & if anyone can help, thanks, Gill;)

Hi Gill,

I live in Adelaide & have relatives in Pt Adelaide. I'm planning on going to the Library soon which has records for Sth Australian BMD to 1937 aprox. If you let me know names & dates I can check things for you.

You could also try this link it has collections about the Port Adelaide area.

http://www.portenf.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=328

If you need BMD details there is nothing online for Sth Australia. It can only be accessed on the state library in house computers in person.

Cheers Peta

4 Lydia Bampton

Hi Gil,:)

Not a problem. Just hope I can get some detail for you. Do you have Henry Bamptons' wife's name? Just to give me another point of reference. It might not be before next week that I can get into the library. I have a daughter off sick at the moment. :'( Hopefully she will be over her cough by then.

Cheers Peta

Hi Peta,
Hope your daughter is better soon, make sure she is ok firstly as our children are our life.:(
Henry Bampton (1829), his wifes' name was Mary Browning (1826).
Henrys' elder brother George Bampton arrived in Adelaide abt 10 years before with his wife Catherine Robertson.
Interestingly the brothers didnot speak for years because 1 brother married a Catholic ( so I am told), this is a shame when families don't speak.
Thanks again so much,
Gill

Hi Lynn,

Most of our public librarys have geneology sections with micro fische to be able to look things up like BMD's. Qld has a good online search engine, so do NSW & WA. Victoria has a pay to view site costs 99cents to look up there.
Sth australia has most of its records on line at the state library & can only be viewed at the library. If there are some SA records you need I can do a lookup when I go in again. Just give me full names if you can.& any other detail you have.

These are the websites for the states I mentioned. JUst look for anything to do with family history searches & you should be able to do searches fine.

Let me know if you want me to do anything here.

Cheers Peta

Hi Gillian,
I've just gotten interested in my family history, and am descended from one of the brothers (Henry). Here's a few things I've found out so far that you might find interesting:
George Bampton (the first brother to arrive) emigrated to New Zealand first with his wife. They had at least 1 (and perhaps 3) children there before they emigrated to Australia after an incident that occurred on the South Island. He's actually listed as a pioneer of the settlement due to when he arrived. I haven't looked into his story much as he isn't the brother I'm related to.
Henry Bampton and Mary Browning arrived in Port Adelaide in 1855 on board the Victoria Regia. Their eldest son (Henry) was born and died on the ship (at one day old). They had at least 7 other children from the resources I've been able to find. I'm still working through a search of South Australian newspaper items, but it has provided some unexpected info.
Just let me know if there's any other info you'd like.
Maria
