Barkan/Copeland

Hi

I am reseraching the following Barkan family. This branch were known
by the surname Barkan, but their cousins were Copelands. They all
lived in the Manchester/Salford area.
Jacob Nathan Barkan (Yankel Nossen) born about 1890 - I think in Riga.

Brothers: David, Benjamin and Jud. Benjamin was the youngest of the boys
Sisters: Ethel, Tilly and Rose
Ethel married Abie Luft
Tilly married her cousin Lionel Copeland
Rose married Abie Galpern from Scotland

Jacob, the eldest, came to Manchester as a very young child. The
others were born in Manchester/Salford area.

Hi Michelle,

The only Jacob Barkan I could find in 1901 was born abt 1889 Russia,
he and family are living the civil parish of North Manchester, RD Preswitch, Sub RD Cheetham. His siblings names are different to the ones you mentioned, parents Harris and Rachel.

The Jacob in 1901 has his place of birth in 1891 as Manchester.

Lear is probably Leah.
Jacob, Tilly, Ethel, David, Ben and Rose all seem to be correct, so this looks like it is on the right track.

This sounds correct. Apparently his sibling Solomon changed his surname to Copeland. This is/was common among Jews who wanted to 'Anglisize' their names. I am told that copeland could be Caplan. I wonder if he took his mother's surname and Anglisized that? so far I do not know what Rachel's maiden name was, so this is only a 'wild guess'....

I presume Toby Bargan and Toby Barkan are one and the same. This is possibly Tilly Barkan.

Solomon Copeland is probably Harris Barkan’s brother, who changed his surname to Copeland.
Solomon and Fanny Copeland lived in Dublin, Ireland and later in Holyhead, Wales with their 4 sons:
Lionel (born 1887) (married cousin Tilly Barkan)
Israel Copeland birth Oct./Dec.1894 Dublin South
Jacob Copeland (b 1897) and
Eli Copeland (b 1902).
The last 3 were born in Dublin Ireland.
