Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

Thomas Hammond MARTYN b. 1860 England d. 1924 Ipoh, Malaya

http://theosophy.katinkahesselink.net/dawn/Vol-4-19-DAWN.htm

"T.H." was the second son of the late W.H. Martyn, head of an old Cornish family, and was born in Finchley (London) in the year 1860. Coming to Australia as a young man in 1884, he, in turn, tried various forms of occupation, and finally commenced in business for himself at Goulburn, where he married Miss Alice Furner. His sojourn there, brief as it was, gave him some organizing opportunities, and his most notable achievement was his work in organizing his fellow-traders and their subsequent adoption of the weekly half-holiday, now universally established throughout Australia. However, Goulburn did not offer sufficient scope to a man of his outstanding ability, and after three years he came to Sydney, with the intention of reading for the Bar.

I suppose that's true. :) Even Fred FURNER after a very successful business period in Goulburn came to Sydney and became a broker on the Stock Exchange.

1930 N.S.W Electoral Roll – Warringah – Neutral Bay
MARTYN Hilda Marie, 7 Raymond road, home duties
Alice died in 1899. Hilda died 1954 Burwood.

Please see what you can find before and after 1930. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

EDIT: PS. Until I found that obituary I actually thought it was Thomas Henry and so had the wrong birth and the wrong death. :D

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. This is the one I've just found was all wrong.

1937 N.S.W Electoral Roll - West Sydney - Camperdown
JOHNSTON David Leslie, 258 King street, labourer
Can't find him in E/R after 1937 and no doubt about his death:

Death # 19849/1963 JOHNSTON DAVID LESLIE WILLIAM JOHN ELEANOR BALMAIN

Marriage # 18982/1948 JOHNSTON DAVID LESLIE NICHOLS VERA GLEBE ?

Vera Maud JOHNSTON E/R 1943 Griffith and 1954 Bowman ? (1949 & 1954 in WA also ?)

I know the marriage has Vera only but for some reason I think it is Vera Maud hence the original choice which has proved to be wrong.
If I'm wrong about the Maud bit then there are several possible deaths for Vera JOHNSTON.

----------------
Not this one
Birth # 38000/1904 NICHOLS VERA M CHARLES T ESME I WATERLOO

Marriage # 10992/1934 BROOKS ALBERT W J NICHOLS VERA M REDFERN

Death # 28675/1969 BROOKS VERA MAUD CHARLES THOMAS ESME ILA BANKSTOWN

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I can't find the 1948 marriage in NLA. I'm not 100% sure it is Vera Maud so that would rule those E/R out. I'm not even sure it's the same David Leslie - married at age 41 ? Born in Glebe and died in Balmain and married in Glebe would fit. It's the only David Leslie JOHNSTON death I can find. It would be easier if there was a 2nd death and entries in E/R and I might say my David didn't marry. ???

I can't find a burial at Eastern Suburbs, Woronora or Rookwood Indep. for David. His father is buried at CofE Rookwood and his mother at Presbyterian Rookwood.

Rookwood A & G search is down. :(

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Those are the younger twin siblings born 1911.

There is no sign in NSW BMD or Ryderson of a 2nd David Leslie. The possible marriage at age 41 and other things suggest he didn't marry, so there must be another one for that 1948 marriage.

If this is the death of Vera then she was born about 1918 which would fit the marriage so perhaps the 2nd David was also born after 1918.

JOHNSTON Vera Maud Funeral notice 07MAR2002 Funeral 84 late of Karana Downs, formerly of Balmoral Courier Mail (Brisbane) 06MAR2002 ?

Would fit with the Qld. E/R too. Balmoral does not fit for my JOHNSTON family - all around Glebe area not north side.

I still can't see him in E/R after 1937.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. This is sister Nell and I'm not sure she married or that her middle name is Melva.

Ellenor M JOHNSTON b. 1911 Glebe d. aft 13 Nov 1940

Birth # 3821 JOHNSTON ELLENOR M 1911 WILLIAM J ELLENOR GLEBE

Everything above this line is correct. :)

So I have no marriage and no death for Nell, also called Helen in her father's death notice - therefore alive in 1940.
I presume still alive in 1966 for that message.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ellenor Melva Johnston 1930 New South Wales New England
Ellenor Melva Johnston 1936 New South Wales Gwydir

Marriage # 11423/1941 MOYLAN MERVYN RAYMOND JOHNSTON ELLENOR MELVA INVERELL

1943, 1949 & 1953 Gwydir

EDIT: HAHAHA - I just noticed 11 + 21 = 32 :D It's not even 9 pm here.

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. How curious. I mentioned how Fred FURNER left Goulburn to become a stock broker and what do I see for T H MARTYN :)

Other twin. This one should be easier.

Birth # 3822 JOHNSTON WILLIAM H 1911 WILLIAM J ELLENOR J GLEBE 1911

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – West Sydney – Glebe
JOHNSTON Dorothy May, 31 Glebe street, home duties
JOHNSTON William John, 31 Glebe street, labourer
I think that should be William Henry.

JOHNSTON William Henry Death notice 06NOV1992 Death 81 late of Glebe SMH 09NOV1992
JOHNSTON William Henry (The Judge) Died in hospital - spouse Dorothy - children William, Ronald & Eleanor.

Please see what you can find after 1936. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I think we both should call it a day. :)

The 11+ 21 =32 proved that mine could not be the one with middle name = Melva who was in the 1930 E/R.

All I can say is mine was born 1911 probably alive in 1966 and called Nell or Helen by different family members and no death has been found yet.

Regards,

Dave
