Hello Joan,

I have very little information about those who are descendants of John and Mary Elizabeth who arrived in Australia in 1857 who ended up in South Australia. I know the name in Yorkshire had many variations including BARROW prefix and CLIFF(E) suffix but I know of none of my line changing their name from BARRACLOUGH. As I've mentioned there are at least two different branches of the family in Australia.

Several BARROWCLIFFE arrived in 1857 on a different vessel

BARROWCLIFFE Eliza 33 Washington Irving 1857 Sydney and/or Newcastle and daughter Reel 2138, [4/4794]; Reel 2476, [4/4972]
BARROWCLIFFE Sarah J 11 Washington Irving 1857 Sydney and/or Newcastle and mother Reel 2138, [4/4794]; Reel 2476, [4/4972]

and there is this one to SA:

BARROWCLIFFE Thomas Pearson arrived 1838-05-15 on Trusty from London [Source:7,14,26]

I would say any in Australia probably arrived with the name as such.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

It is May:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 9 April 1951
DEATHS
JOHNSTONE Vere May -April 7, 1951 at a private hospital Ashfield dearly beloved wife of Harold Johnstone, of 40 O'Connor Street, Haberfield and loving mother of Barry, Annette and Peter, dear sister of Norman and Harry Barraclough and niece of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Matthews.

I don't know where they were earlier. Also I don't know how the MATTHEWS fit in. Vere's sisters married CALDER, BURROWS, SANDS & STOWE so ???

This is a possible death although there is a middle name:

28381/1965 JOHNSTONE HAROLD THOMAS THOMAS VIOLET BURWOOD

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Only alternative is that Annie Prest SMITH had a sister who married that MATTHEWS.

Death # 859/1941 BARRACLOUGH ANNIE PREST JOSEPH MARTHA JANE PETERSHAM

Well, I can't see a marriage for either of them:

8361/1885 SMITH EMMA E JOSEPH MARTHA NEWTOWN
8661/1888 SMITH ALICE J JOSEPH MARTHA NEWTOWN

Hello crankypants,

That possible 1965 death looks very sick now with this marriage:

6958/1923 JOHNSTONE THOMAS GOW VIOLET ANNANDALE

So where was Harold born and when did he die? Looks like no middle name and no service record.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Sorry to hear about your sister. It's been about 40 years since I was in Queensland and about 20 years since I last visited Adelaide. I'll try to have fun. Spending all of Easter in hospital unless the hip replacement surgery is cancelled. I'm wondering if after three months I'll forget how to tie shoe laces. :D Perhaps it's 'muscle memory' by now. I'm supposed to bend my hip less than 90 degrees and not put my hands below my knees for three months. I'm hoping it's not going to be really bad being in hospital over Easter with reduced staff, no physio, etc... They'd better give me some chocolate on Friday. >:D

Dave

Hi Dave

My poor sister is struggling again with cancer.
Now that I know why your away I'll take back 'have fun'.
Yes being in hospital is the last place anybody would want to be at anytime of the year.
Well I’d be complaining if they didn’t give me any chocolate easter eggs so I suggest you inform them of your quota on arrival.:D
This year I’ve made an executive decision to forgo the easter eggs, the mirror confirmed my suspicions what damage the Tim Tams have been doing to me.
I expect you'll be walking bare foot, hang on what about the aussie thongs.:2fun:
Take care.;)

cheers
