BBC1. The Victorians

Did anyone watch this programme on Sunday night at 9pm, presented by Jerremy Paxman. The 1st of 4 programmes.

I know the Victorians have almost been 'done to death', but was very interesting.
Linking art to reality and the great social changes of our major cities.
It's well worth a look.

Yeah, that was scary. And the description of what the environment was to be inside. And that was laid down by a religious cleric.
That was 'charity' at it's absolute basic.
No more than a slave labour camp. But I suppose between that and nothing, 'that' appeared to be favourable.
But the connection with the art as historical diaries of the day was great. Victorian video of the day.

Yes I watched it, & I thought it was Terrific. ( I have a OAP Crush on Paxman, I only watch Newsnight if he"s presenting ) but I digress! I really did think the programme was great.
I don"t live far from Manchester & It"s made me want to go & have a good look inside the Town Hall.
I don"t live far away from Blackpool either & my Dad loved the place, it made me wonder if any of his Victorian Ancestor"s went there & it"s in the blood. The Artwork shown was wonderful & in my opinion it showed just what total Rubbish this Modern Art is from the likes of Damian Hurst etc. really is.
I will definately be watching the rest of the series.

I'm was so guilty of not going to see what's on my doorstep. Sadly most of it has gone and concrete put in it's place.
I like Paxman also, articulate and a slight snobbery. 'Killer' of politicians.

Those workhouse buildings were very spooky. We dont know we are born. Imagine the horror of that place all those decades ago?

Jeremy was served gruel. Gruel is just similar to porridge and when he was breaking up stones to represent the idle workmates, then he was said they broke up 250kg a day.

Several of my ancestors ended up in the workhouse but this was due to old age and infirmity or bronchitis.

Hi Everyone,
It was another really cracking programme last night. I am finding the Art Work Shown truely fascinating as a snapshot of Victorian Life.
The Reference to the Child Illnesses was heart breaking, I remember having Scarlet Fever as a very small child & although I was really very ill I obviously recovered but those poor souls didn"t have the Medical Knowhow that we had by the 40"s
This is One of the best programmes I"ve seen for ages. Good Old Paxo!

In Victorian times once someone had contracted TB, diptheria, erysipelas or other infectious diseases then there was very little that the doctor could actually do. He only offered a few remedies and the casualty was given hot broths to keep them warm and the medicines they were given just helped smooth the path to the grave.

TB took time to kill someone and the sufferer just wasted away over time.

They should have a few more history programmes dedicated to how a Victorian suffered during an illness.

I remember reading a book about the Bishop of Carlisle that lost his five daughters. I can't remember what it was called but very interesting. I don't know I would want a painting of a dying or dead child on my wall.

I don't think I would either. But they do show small snapshots of social history.
And poor old Queen Vic. seventeen years of pregnancy. Just like our own rellies.
But to lose all those children in 1 month. It is unimaginable now, in our society.

A typical poor families meal in Victorian times was probably bread, potato or a stew. City folk may have bought a few pies from a market stall or a melted cheese roll.

Many poor Victorians slept almost fully clothed due to the cold. It was only the middle class that kept their bedrooms warm during the night in their opulent fireplace.

I would love to co-write an episode of this show with Paxo.

You have uncovered my secret! Yes I have a huge crush on Paxo. (I only watch Newsnight if he is presenting it the others just bore me rigid)
But I must confess, although "The Victorians" is a fab programme, I would watch Paxo reading a Railway Timetable so there!!!!!
