Very Sunny day in Sheffield at Kelham Island Industrial Island publicising Timewalk project which promotes Sheffield Heritage. Got some great photos all Summer of Sheffield heritage buildings. Don't suppose there will be many more.

The Lagoon is the River Don. Sheffield's major river. Used to be one of Europe's most polluted rivers. Now you walk along it and watch the fish come up for flies, and the heron standing looking for fish. There are kingfishers and otters I am told but I've only seen Herons and fish rising.

Not really tucked away. It goes right through the heart of the city literally. The city was founded where the Sheaf and the Don meet. The Saxons built a Fort there then the Normans built a castle. In a couple of years time they will be uncovering substantial parts of Sheffield Castle.

Any evidence of Roman occupation in Sheffield?

There was a big fort just on the Rotherham side (Now Magna Museum) and they have just found a substantial Farm and supply station in a place called Whirlow Farm. Probably more will show up. The Roman farm was a surprise as they were looking for Iron age due to field finds. Of course nearby Doncaster and Chesterfield were both Roman towns.

I am off to see a dig tomorrow. Don't know if they have found anything. Its just one of these compulsory investigations before they redevelop the site. Might only be Victorian pots.

Was a very small dig but interesting. Certainly didn't need wellies. Not a lot of pot, some earthenware pieces and some fairly modern bit of toys and a car exhaust pipe.
