Bedford baptisms

Hello!

I am looking for the baptism/births of the following people in Bedford:

Robert Adams c.1872
Ellen Letitia Adams c.1874
Margaret Emily Adams c.1875

I can find no entry in the GRO indexes for these people - but wondered if there may be baptism entries available? Is anyone able to visit Bedford Record Office for help?

Does any of them appear on anyone's tree? Ellen Letitia Adams was my great-grandmother.

Hi Cilla,
I assume these are the children of Leticia Adams(c1839) born in Truro, Cornwall. Then moved from Barking in Essex to Bedford and onto Twerton(Tiverton?) in Somerset.

Hi there Cilla, welcome to the site & good luck with your searches-I found on the IGI a Robert Adams and an Ellen Letitia Adams both baptised on the same day - 27th July 1875 at St Mary Bedford, parents ? Adams & Letitia. no Margaret Emily though, could this be them? :)

Hi Steve,

You are quite correct - they are the children of Letitia Adams, b.Truro 1837.
My problem lies in the fact that they were all married with the information that their father was 'Henry Adams' and serving in the Army. Their birthdates all corroborate with the censuses (1881,1891 and 1901), and all their marriage certificates.

However, their 'father' in fact died in 1869 - and I have his death certificate to prove it!! I am trying to establish if they were actually born in Bedford, or just baptised there?

It is rather a long winded story, but in a nutshell, Letitia Pooley married Henry Adams in Dublin in 1857, leaving a fortnight later for NZ where they lived until 1868. Whilst there, they had 6 children (two who died in NZ), and one who died on their return in 1868. Allegedly, Henry Adams was on business in London when he died suddenly of a stomach complaint.

Neither Letitia nor her children appear on the 1871 census for England, which makes me wonder whether she was with her father in Dublin at the time of her husband's death.

Could I be correct in assuming that Robert, Ellen Letitia and Margaret Emily were, in fact, illegitimate children of Letitia's after the death of her husband, but brought up to think their father was away in the Army - hence the fact he is mentioned on all their marriage certificates? Letitia never remarried, and lived until 1920.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cilla

Hi Pejay

Thanks for your warm welcome, and thanks for replying so promptly!

Yes indeed it is the same two. I am trying to find out if they actually were born there or just baptised there.

With no GRO certificates, it is most difficult to know!!

Any ideas?

Cilla

Hi

I have just looked up the 1881 census and it says that the 3 children were all born in Bedford so if they were baptised there then it is probably true.

I just noticed that the IGI entry says parents were "Adams and Letitia Adams". Not actually naming the fathers first name then?

The original entry should give more clues. Maybe they were all baptised as Letitia's illegitimate children.
