Hello,

I'd like a look up please in 1841 for the following BENSLEY family in Norfolk.

Henry b. abt 1790 Gressenhall
Elizabeth b. 1824 Great Fransham
Sarah b. 1828 Great Fransham

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. They were still in England but perhaps missing or mistranscribed in 1841.

The family left in 1852:

BENSLEY Henry 62 'John Gray' 1852 2136, 2463

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Henry's son William and his family were on the same vessel.

Assisted immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle, 1844-59
BENSLEY William 36 and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463
BENSLEY Frances 32 and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463
BENSLEY Henry 12 and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463
BENSLEY Julia 6 and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463
BENSLEY James 4 and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463
BENSLEY William inft and family John Gray 1852 2136, 2463

Interestingly the shipping record say William b. 1852 was born in Hull and James in Swaffham and the others in Fransham.

Marriages Dec 1839
BENSLEY William Mitford &c 13 531
BLOMFIELD Frances Mitford 13 531

Please see if you can find William & Frances in 1841 and both families in 1851. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Very curious. The only William BENSLEY that fits is this one and it's not in Hull:

Births Dec 1851
Bensley William Mitford 13 214

For James this is the only one and the page number is not within the expected range hence an error in district or volume or page:

Births Jun 1848
Bensley James Tunstead 13 547

All the other entries are for Wangford which is in Suffolk and that's also not Swaffham.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

The place of birth for James agrees with the shipping record. Curious. Swaffham is not in either RD Tunstead or Wangford.

In Australia Julia is Anne J or Ann Julia so the closest one is this one:

Births Sep 1846
Bensley Ann Elizabeth Tunstead 13 315

and that is not Little Fransham.

The other possibility is that they registered only the first two and not the next four births.

William b. abt 1851

Births Dec 1851
BENSLEY William Mitford 13 214

Fransham fits where the family lived but shipping record says born in Hull, Yorkshire. ?

Birth Reg# V18521625 56 Born in England but baptised in NSW ?

Would have to view that church record to see if it was a baptism only.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Henry's spouse Elizabeth died in 1830 so it's possible he remarried. However I can't see a marriage in IGI. The only one is in Aug 1841 which is after the census and it is to an Elizabeth and not in the Fransham area.

Thank you very much. :D

Hello crankypants,

I can't see a burial for Elizabeth in 1830. This must be Barbara's death:

Deaths Mar 1851
Bensley Barbara Mitford 13 186

Henry is listed on shipping record thus:

Widower Farm servant Gravenhaul Co Norfolk Wesleyan Neither

I assume it means Gressenhall.

Dave

Hi Crankypants,
I;n not sure if this is the same BENSLEY family but I have a query for a William Bensley who was married to a Deborah Rushmere who's daughter Effa/Effie born 2 Dec 1791 in Reedham Norfolk who later married a Edmund Fenn 3 May 1817.

Hello johnl,

welcome to FHUK.

The Bensley family is in my tree so I'll have a look. This is the top one in my tree:

Henry - baptised 22 Mar 1790 Gressenhall, Norfolk
parents Henry BENSLEY & Mary FISHER

We may need someone else with access to more records to actually answer your query.

Regards,

Dave

Bit late in 2024 But here is the answer . Same Henry BENSLEY but the key is his other daughter Anne born 1813. She married James POLL b 1816 at Little Fransham and he persuaded William BENTLEY and the recently widowed Henry BEASLEY born defiantly Gressenhall (Yes the name changed a lot but same family ) to Emigrate on an assisted passage .1852 to Sydney Aus, .With the POLL family who's children's ages mirrored the BEASLEY's (so they Must have been very close especially as Williams wife Frances gave birth on the journey to the departure port of HULL at Hull prior to sailing as outlined in the Embarkation manifest ( I see a birth at Swaffham 1848 was queried ,logical if Money and employment was require pre-trip remember the families were Non-Conformist ) The POLL's formed a dynasty based at Crook well NSW, and the core family is still there. I presume that this is also the destination of BENTLEY/BEASLEY family (Who could read and wright by 1850's)

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Furner, Bensley, and connected Wesleyan families in my tree around Crookwell.

Thanks for the details.

Dave

Heck Dave , did not think anyone would notice the post ! Will follow the Bensley's that seem to have stayed in G.B. but as I am Doing a "POLL" One name Study it is international and would be of interest to me if you have further connections ,as these family groups we seem all inter related and therefore Attributable.
