Hi guys,
I've hit a real brick wall on this, I've asked other genie friends about this and they can't break it either...here goes
Bernard McDermott wife Jane someone
Bernard's children all have Clapham as mothers maiden name,
I think I have Bernard in 1851-61-71-81-91-1901,
Can't find marriage of Bernard and Jane Clapham, so maybe she married Bernard with a new married name as a widow possibly?
On early census 51 I have Bernard's father as Peter, mother Mary if I have the correct Bernard! Hope you can help
Cheers

Bernard's brother Martin possibly

Birth
28 Aug 1853 • Liverpool, Lancashire, England
MCDERMOTT, MARTIN mothers maiden name DACEY Order GRO Reference: 1853 D Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 1

So if I can find Bernard's birth to confirm Peter father and Mary Dacey as mother I'll know 1851 and 1861 are correct!

You should also be aware, that some Catholic marriages use Latinised christian names, or even Irish versions of the whole name.

But I would think, that by law in those times, the English versions of their names, would have possibly been Anglicized.

Hi Steve,
One of my genie friends found this too, but with Bernard's father being Peter? As you say sometimes they used middle names ! But it has Janes father as King not Clapham...that's were I get confused, but we also noted Bernard's job as porter which has popped up before...thanks

The Latinised names seem to imply a Catholic marriage yet at least two of Bernard and Jane's children were baptised in a C of E church.
