Was wondering if anyone could help, please. I have a birth certificate of my relative born in l906, it shows the child's Mother's name .....Roberts, the same as the Father and then underneath the Mother's name it says in brackets (formerly Griffiths). Would this be her maiden name do you think, but as I understand it, it wasn't until 1912 that they started writing the maiden names on birth certificates? Or more likely that she was not married, or married before? Any ideas gratefully received.
Janey:)

Hi Janey,

Formerly would mean maiden name. The mothers maiden name was added to the birth index around 1911/12, the mothers maiden name has always been entered on the birth certificate.
