Hi again, I would like to know how you find out the name of the father of an unmarried woman's children. This is a real mystery to me. I'm still trying to work out Mary Nixon's story. On the 1881 census she is unmarried but, has three children. What does Gr mean?. This is written after each child. Does this mean born out of wedlock? Would the father's name be on the birth certificate? Kind regards Merle.

Hi Merle,

The only thing I can think what gr stands for grand/dau/son it may have been crossed out because it was a mistake, other than that I dont know.
As its getting late and time for bed will have another look tomorrow.
