Birth information from Ancestry

The info given when searching births is very basic and not a lot of help! - surname, name and district. to get all the info do you have to purchase the full certificate? which can be expensive if you are not sure you have the correct basic info to start with. Is there a way of seeking this info free or at minimal cost?

To get all the information you require, you will have to order the cert.

You may get away with a baptism record, but no mothers maiden name is usually given.

For just under £10 from the GRO, it's worth it to get the correct information. It may cost you more in time and money, if you get the wrong info.

Do not buy certs from any other online resource, except the GRO, or the registry office of the the place of birth.

Yes, pretty much so. Later certs may hold a little more info, as the informants were more literate, in general. It will depend what year you are talking about.

Generally, the info on the birth cert will give fathers name and occupation, mothers maiden name. Place and/or address of birth.

There are the odd occasions where the informant on the birth cert, may be another family member. But in most cases it will either one of the parents.

Nothing is guaranteed, as to what info is given on the cert, but it is usually what I've mentioned.

How can I find the GRO reference number? or I have the volume number (18 ) and page number (669) how do I convert this to a GRO reference number?

Generally I have found it cheaper to order from the relevant registrar. Most registration offices have a system set up so you can pay them online. I have heard tale of some thinking of supplying a digital copy which would be nice as that would be cheaper & you don't need a legal document if you are doing family research, you just want to see what's written down.

This may seem a silly question, but can you advise me where I can get a Birth Certificate for 1802, in Wales. I have tried GRO but they only start from 1837.

The person I am looking for is

John Holl - Baptism - 16th July 1802. - Llanfair, Cilgedin, Monmouthshire. Not sure if Monmouthshire is correct but that was what was transcribed. (this was from FMP)

His father was William Holl B 1778 New Radnor. Occupation in 1837 Farmer (age 59)

Hi Katy,

Its not a silly question by any means. Civil registration didnt come into been until 1837 therefore before that time we have to go by baptism records.
