Birth medial records

I think my grandmother was actually her sisters child and I am trying to establish who my great grandparents were. I only found out this week, that the man she thought was her father actually died a long time before she was born. My grandmother is no longer with us.

I want to try and get hold of the medical/birth records from her birth. She is from Barnwell, Northamptonshire. Nearest town was Oundle

Is this even possible?

I see there was an Army camp there in 1939 .Not sure of your timeline .A lot of illigit children were born to soldiers living in camps .

Re: Birth medial records (Grandmothers birth year)

My Grandmother was Elizabeth Baker and was born on 06 May 1918 at Barnwell Mill. Her Mum was 49 and her sister was 18 at the time.
Her birth certificate indicates her Mother was Mary Elizabeth Baker, but Father is blank.
She also left the Mill and went to work at Barnwell castle and got her own home.

I think my grandmother was actually her sisters child
Is there anything that makes you think that?

It is very possible for her to have a child at 49 and been a widow she obviously had a relationship with someone and had a child.

Re: Birth medial records (Grandmothers birth year)

She also left the Mill and went to work at Barnwell castle and got her own home.
Was Barnwell Mill the actual place of birth or is there a hospital noted as place of birth?

Who registered the birth?

If possible can you post all the info on the birth certificate please. It might help to be able to put us on the right road.

Im wondering if

1. The birth info is correct and the mother stated on the cert. is the actual mother.
2. If Elizabeth wasnt born in a hospital if her grandmother registered her as her own child.
3. Why do you feel that Elizabeth may not be Mary's child?

Either way no father is noted so would be a very slim chance of finding out who he was.

Re: Birth medial records (certificate)

Thank you so much for your replies.
The reason I think Elizabeth may not be Mary’s child is because she always said John Baker was and so did Elizabeth’s husband (my Grandfather).said he died when she was a baby. But John Baker died in 1903.
Mary lived in the Mill and the Baker brothers did various businesses in the village. Not sure when the Mill was sold or who took over.

The birth certificate (which I have) says:
When where born : Sixth May 1918, Barnwell Mill, Barnwell, Northants
Name: Elizabeth
***: Girl
Name of Father : struck through
Name of Mother: Mary Elizabeth Baker formally Travis
Occupation of father : struck through
Signature description of informant: Mary E. Baker, Mother, Barnwell Mill, Barnwell
When registered : 28 May 1918
Signature of registrar: Margaret R Shelmeudine Deputy

Yes that is my great grandmother. So young enough to have a baby.
My great grandmother (Mary) worked at Barnwell castle and as part of her job was given a house at no 24 Barnwell.

If Elizabeth’s Mum is her mother then my grandmother is not a blood relative of the Bakers. If she was born to Kathleen (her sister), then she is.

It’s quite emotional really because we have always been very proud of our Baker line, but we may not be Bakers now at all.

I did discover my Travis side of the family this week and they were Royal Engineers. I may take a trip down to Kent to see their house and the local museum.

Funny thing was Mary didn’t bring her son John Baker - born in India Karachi (named after his Dad) with her to the Mill. No idea where he went. He was in my grandmothers wedding photos, so I know he didn’t die.
I will look into him next and Kathleen. Maybe I have Travis relatives still alive :)
