I am trying to find out in which Regiment my paternal grandfather may have been in. I only know that in the 1901 census (Scotland) his wife was described as "a soldiers wife reservist" and I guess he must have been serving during the Boer War then.
However, I have no idea of which regiment he could have been in, he lived in Greenopck, Scotland and I would imagine that he may have joined a Scottish regiment there, but when I do not know, he is missing on most of the census 1881, 1891 and 1901, possibly when he may have been a soldier./
How would I go about finding out in which branch of the army he could have served in?
Especially in 1901, as he was a reservist, which I assume means he could have been recalled?
Unfortunately his is a very common name in Scotland, James Barr, it may be like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Any help would be most appreciated, thank you
