Hi there,
I'm trying to find my great grandfather military history prior to 1914 where he was a CSM with the Cheshire Regt.
I also know that he was in Cork, Ireland between 1909 and 1913 as my grandmother was born in Ireland in 1913 but her next eldest sibling was born in 1909 in Warrington.
His name is Frederick Sweeney and sadly he was killed on the Somme in 1916........I've been trying to find this information out for my father for nearly 10 years now and would appreciate any help I can get.

One person, I was able to get an image of his entry in the British Record Book entitled: Prisoners of War at Cape Town and Natal. This was kindly done for me by a David Biggins. Unfortunately I have not been able to reach David again as I would like to get a copy of the other two mens entries as well.
Do you have any suggestions? The other two men, for your information are:

My great grandfather returned from the siege of Ladysmith where he served with the Natal Mounted Rifles with a cartoon drawn for the "Ladysmith Lyre", one of several publications which appeared during the siege. The illustrator is either G.M.D., or C.M.D. Does anyone know who this may be? Unfortunately, I do not seem to be able to import it to this site.

Col Alfred Lester Thring was born in 1857 in Ladysmith South Africa. He married Annie Bussel in 1885. His daughter Irene is my great grandmother.
Although he was the son of English settlers he fought on the side of the boers under Christiaan de Wet. There is actually a beautiful picture of all of them online right now. If you google image " Christiaan de Wet and his staff " a photo of 8 men comes up. de Wet is 3rd from the right and I'm sure that is AL Thring next to him , 2nd to the right. ( In the puffy trousers ) I have photos of Thring , but as an older man. de Wet mentions AL Thring in his book " Three Years Of War "
During the first word war Thring was involved with the British army and was appointed Lt- Colonel of the 5 th Mounted Brigade ,which became known as "Thrings Light Horse"in Walvis Bay, SW Africa .

1. So far I have Alfred Lester Thring's father as also an Alfred, his mother as Mary Ann Baker.
2. Alfred's father as Samuel J Thring, married twice. His first wife (and Alfred's mother) I don't have her name. Samuel's second wife was Elizabeth Treleaven-Abbot.
3. After that I am not 100% sure. But I do have Samuel's father also as a Samuel and his mother as Sarah Day.
4. And Samuel Thrings father as a James Thring and his mother as a Susanna.

It shows 7 men, 3 seated in the front row and 4 standing at the back. Unfortunately there are no names to these men. It is quite possible that Alfred Lester THring is one of them.
I have a copy of it if you haven't seen it.

I do not have a copy of that photo and I would love to get it. I have a photo of Irene Thing with her 3 little boys, one of them being my grandfather. I can send you a photo of that if you are interested. The little boys ended up in an orphanage for a few years until Irene married Rhodes.
