Boer War Vet???

Maclean nsw
In the obituary notice of my grandfather, Herbert James Taylor born 28 Aug. 1873 in Australia, it states he was a Boer war veteran. I can only find info on a Herbert James Cox Taylor (not mine) The Aust. War Mem. has no info on him nor does the National Archives. It was said his medal was stolen. I would like to know one way or the other if he was involved but just can't seem to get anywhere. Any advice out there. Cheers from OZ.
