Bookbinders

All my Ancesters from the 1700's into the the18oo's werebookbinders. Are there any bookbinders still around today? Christine.

As I understand it bookbinders are still alive & kicking today. They make the covers for all those books we love to read. Also if you get a good one they restore old books in need of attention.

They certainly do exist - in fact its one of my husband's hobbies, especially rebinding antiquarian books.

About 10 years or so ago it was possible to do an evening class in bookbinding at Brunel College, Bristol. We've left the area now, so don't know if they still do it.

nb modern books, esp paper backs tend to have glued spines, hand done ones will be stitched.
