Bowen from Ecuador

Hi to everyone,
My name is Maria and I will love to find my roots, I live in Quito,Ecuador and have so little information of my ancestors. We know that they came from the UK around 1851. There is a picture of the first one with a name something like Apolinair Bowen the picture was taken in Lima, Peru in 1851. I will like so much to find all the information around my Bowen roots. Could you help me find something or how to start with so little information?

Hi Maria,

A big welcome to the forum.

Nothing has come up on the English 1841 census for that name. On the LDS site (Latter Day Saints) I came across a Apolonia Bowen Cardenas being born in 1909 marrying in 1925 and a death in 1998 all in Ecuador, would this person be one of your ancestors? Not knowing when or where they were born this would be a hard task. I suggest that you trace back on your Ecuador/Peru side first, I dont know what resources Ecuador/Peru has for family history or what details marriage and birth certificates have.

I have no idea how to proceed since I have no experience in genealogy..yet you have found the right link, The two names that you found are from my family. The other name I had is Apolinair Bowen that I think was the first to come..my great grandfather was Oliva Bowen. My grandfather was Dimas Burbano Bowen Ribadeneira and my grandmother was Francisca Bowen Solorzano. Her father was Oliva Bowen who was the oncle of my grandfather Dimas Burbano.
I thank you so much for having share with me this information. If you have the kindness to help me letting me know how to look for my brittish ancestors.

I did have a look on the ships passenger lists there are quite a few Bowen's.
One particular couple stood out, but now I cannot find which passenger list they were on it may have been on the ships passenger lists for the Gulf as I remember thinking that probaly they are going over the boarder either into or from Mexico. This is from memory.

Mr Bowen age 28 merchant origin of country England
Mrs Bowen age 23 origin of country Spain

There were no children listed with them perhaps they didnt list them all those years ago.

What age do you think that Apolinair is in the picture? To try and find out the fathers name I suggest that you get Apolinairs marriage certificate and see if the fathers name is mentioned and also the occupation. Secondly if there were any siblings (brothers/sisters) of Apolinair born in Peru or Ecuador to obtain one of their birth certificates and and see if it mentions the fathers name.

As Aurora's name isnt coming up on our records did Mr. Bowen marry Aurora in England or could it have been Spain? and assuming its a Catholic marriage not all Catholic marriages are in our bmd indexes these are known as non-conformists, and not knowing where Mr. Bowen comes from it would be impossible to look through the parish registers as there are far to many and are not kept in one place. Perhaps there are some records in Peru that lists merchants or any land records etc that may possibly give some information.

I made an appointement for the 23 of this month with a person that is porbably the best genealogist in Ecuador. I will gather the most of this visit and let you know what information he has to see if we can track the brittish information with some more precise information.
