I have just been reading a book on the history of Boyle town, which is quite near to where I live.
In the book, some of the people were interviewed who remembered it.
Apparently the conditions in poor house were so bad, that people preferred to go to jail, as the conditions there were far more superior.
Ironically, when the poor house was demolished, a care home and day centre was built on the site. Which is a far cry from what the previous building was used for.
