Hi Dave i started my research last year but could not get any further than my great great grandfather Frank or Francis Bradley DOB 1841 Kidderminster he shows up on the 1881 census as a carter..On the 1841 census there is a possibility that my great great great grandmother was Margaret Bradley but it does not show my g g g grandfather.

Tryphena from Greek, meaning daintiness or delicacy. Mentioned in the New Testament. The name came into general use after the reformation but is rarely used in modern times

so there you go!!

I have a theory, but it needs more work.

In 1841 we have a Margaret Bradley 25 with sons John 2 and FRANCIS 1

In 1851 we have Margaret WALL 36 'wife' of Francis Wall 32 and with children John 12, FRANCIS 10 and Charles 4. It would seem John and Francis have assumed the Wall surname

1861 we still have Francis Wall 42, Margaret 45, FRANCIS 20 Charles 16

1871 Francis now Frank reverts to his birth name of Bradley marries Mary and starts his own family. His mother Margaret 54 is still with Francis Wall 52 Charles 26 and g.dau Mary Jane 2

1881 Frank 40 still with his family as he is in 1891 aged 50, but now Francis again

so my theory is Margaret had John and FRANCIS with George Bradley who was off the scene by the birth of Charles in 1847 possibly before 1841 as he was not on the census. Margaret then 'married' Francis Wall and had child Charles

I have not found the George, so it could be possible John and FRANCIS were Margaret's children born out of wedlock and her maiden name was Bradley
There is a Francis Wall in 1841 living with his father who could be in the frame
I have not found any marriages to confirm this

census refs
1841 Francis Wall HO107-426-2/2-13
1841 HO107-1208-9/30-8
1851 HO107-2037-145-32
1861 RG09-2077-120-37
1871 Francis/Margaret RG10-3035-4-2
1871 Frank RG10-3035-14-21
1881 RG11-2903-49-7
1891 RG12-2316-38-32

Hi Dave

I started my quest when I was 15 in 1968 - but have had the greater success with the advent of online sources in more recent years.

I include the following as it might be of some use in your's

My mother's surname was Bradley before she married my father - her great great grandfather Benjamin Bradley moved from Kidderminster to London some time before 1831 when his daughter Charlotte was born in 1831 in St Pancras.

A small children's prayer book from the late 1700s was left to my mother some years ago and written in it was the names and birth dates of Benjamin and his brothers:
William son of Samuel and Elizabeth Bradley born 28 August 1780;
John born 16 August 1782;
Thomas born 14 January 1785;
James born 12 February 1787;
John born 13 November 1789 (the first presumably died);
Samuel born 30 January 1792
Benjamin born 20 March 1794 (my ancestor - also the first presumably died)

James I found in the 1841 Census still in Kidderminster
John I found in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census also in Kidderminster
Benjamin I have found in 1841,51,61 and 71 Censuses he died soon after the 1871 all in various parts of London

These may all of course bear no relationship to the Bradley's you are looking for - if they are then these birth dates you presumably wont find anywhere else as they were written by a family member themself

Hope this is of use

John
