Hi all,
My first posting.
Haven't much to go on I'm afraid.
My g.g.grandfather Charles Hartley was born c1831 London.
From his obituary it says he became a seaman sailing to several parts of the World before trying his hand at whaling around the South Pacific as well as New Zealand where ,around 1860 must have decided to stay permanetly.
In 1861 he married a Martha Hostein (nee Bomforth) from East Retford, England in the Okains Bay,Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. He was listed as a shoemaker at that time.
Did he learn that trade from his father I wonder.
He spoke Maori fluently so must have frequented N.Z shores freguently when whaling.
Four of their sons were called: William b.1862; George born 1864, Robert John Edward born 1866, George Frederick born 1867; John Christopher born 1876 & 1 daughter Agnes Caroline born ?.
Any help would be great.
