Hi all,
My first posting.
Haven't much to go on I'm afraid.
My g.g.grandfather Charles Hartley was born c1831 London.
From his obituary it says he became a seaman sailing to several parts of the World before trying his hand at whaling around the South Pacific as well as New Zealand where ,around 1860 must have decided to stay permanetly.
In 1861 he married a Martha Hostein (nee Bomforth) from East Retford, England in the Okains Bay,Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. He was listed as a shoemaker at that time.

Did he learn that trade from his father I wonder.

He spoke Maori fluently so must have frequented N.Z shores freguently when whaling.

Four of their sons were called: William b.1862; George born 1864, Robert John Edward born 1866, George Frederick born 1867; John Christopher born 1876 & 1 daughter Agnes Caroline born ?.

Any help would be great.

Hi Dianne,

Not much luck on Charles. Found this one on the 1841 census

civil parish Whittington, county Derbyshire

Charles Hartley born abt 1826 not born in county.

On the 1851 census there is a Charles Hartley age 24 occ gasman born Enfield Middx and with him is a Stephen Hartley occ wellboring labourer born Tottenham Middx.

Thanks very much for looking up Charles Hartleys Julie.
Don't think either sound like him. Pity. Unless of course your first Charles b. abt 1826. 1841 census, dates are out. Who else was there in the household do you know...could be a lead.
Much appreciated.

Thank you Julie for sending rest of household. None of the other names ring a bell but then I don't know who his siblings or parents were. From his obit he was at sea for several years..My only hope is that his boy's names may help find his family. His daughter was named after his wife's mother.
regards, Di
