Baptisms
V18371535 32A/1837 BRIGGS FRANCES - WILLIAM - MARY

All Saints County of Camden 1847
No. 326 6 Novr. 1847 - 15th April 1837 Frances William and Mary Briggs - Port Phillip - Labourer - W. Stone

W. Stone was the minister in the Southern Highlands of NSW - the abode is recorded as Port Phillip (Melbourne) and the birth was in 1837. There is nothing in the record that indicates place of birth. Even for those born England and baptised in NSW pob is not listed. We can't tell from this record where Frances was born or even where she was baptised. We don't know if the minister travelled to Port Phillip with his All Saints register or if the family was actually in NSW in 1847.

V18372929 32A/1837 BRIGGS FRANCES - WILLIAM - MARY
ditto - in the index twice

V18422342 33A/1842 BRIGGS EMMA - WILLIAM - MARY

Christ Church Bong Bong County of Camden 1848
No. 33 2 or 12 July [margin] 1848 - Supposed 1842 Her parents being dead - Emma William and Mary Briggs - Abode: ? - [Suborn ?] - W. Stone

Same CofE minister for baptism of Emma but abode column is blank. Profession is either 'Suborn' or Labourer although the 'S' does not look like 'L' on the page and the word not like other 'Labourer' on the page.

There are no deaths in NSW index 1842-1848 for Mary or William BRIGG/BRIGGS. ???

V18321067 15/1832 BRIGG WILLIAM - CURTIS MARY CJ= CofE Sydney St James

It's an error in the index because 1831 marraiges are in Volume 15 and 1832 marriages in 16.

Page 96
Marriages solemnized in the Parish of Saint James Sydney in the County of Cumberland in the Year 1832
No. 382
William Brigg age 23 yrs of the Parish of St. Lawrence Bachelor
Mary Curtis age 20 yrs of the Parish of St. Lawrence Spinster
married in this Church by License with consent of - [blank]
Twentyfirst day of July 1832 By me Richard Hill Chaplain
Both signed
Witnesses: George Clewett of Bathurst St and Mary Hayward of Parramatta

This is from the film of the form each parish sends to the Registrar General.
It's all written in one hand at a later date and does not contain all the information that's on the original register. There is no film available of the original register to view.

If you purchase a copy from NSW BMD you may or may not get any further details. Sometimes you may get additional details if the parish holds the original register and allows access. I can't tell where the information re George Clewett being Ann's guardian came from. I'm a bit surprised it didn't say 'with consent of her guardians' even if it did not name them.

I still have some to look up at the library.

The baptism for Emma born 1842 says parents had died by 1848 but I can't see deaths that fit 1842-1848.

Has to be a second William and Mary but marriage not in NSW index. The others were in Tasmania and no overlap of children's names between those on the Tas Archives site and those in NSW index for Emma and Frances.

The marriage in Goulburn has William as a bachelor. We know Mary didn't die until 1875.
We are missing a death for the William who married in Goulburn.

One to check:
3145/1859 BRIGGS WILLIAM - CHARLES - BETSEY - GOULBURN

Not in Ryerson

I think that has been the case from the start, Dave... A lot of confusing data from Tasmania, Vic to NSW

Yes, confirmed it's 2x but we have no deaths and no marrige for the parents of Emma and Frances.

I'll let it rest until I get the rest of the records from the local library and a look up of the shipping record for the convict vessel 'John' in 1827.

I have looked at the Archives film of the convict vessel 'John' and it lists the convicts several times, once as an ident and once as a distribution list.

I didn't notice any names of non-convicts apart from the Master. Not even the clergyman or the few known pasengers or the names of the guards.
