I am a New Member and I am James BROUGHTON. I reside in Queensland, Australia and I am attempting to gain some knowledge on the Family background of my Father.

Information I have is that he was born on the 16 Oct 1893 at the Queen Charlotte Hospital, St Marylebone, to Elizabeth WALKER, daughter of Alfred and Sophia WALKER, of Lambeth, Surrey. No Father is shown on the Birth Certificate. On the 1901 UK Census he is included in the household schedule of his Aunt and Uncle, Edward and Ellen RAWSON, residing in Lambeth. Ellen RAWSON is a Sister of Elizabeth WALKER.

James was a Merchant Mariner in the UK and Australian Merchant Navies during WW! and WW2. At some stage after the 1901 UK Census he obviously changed his Surname to BROUGHTON. He eventually married and settled in Australia.

Any information on this elusive character will be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Jim

He may have changed his name to Broughton because it was his fathers name or his mother remarried and he took his stepfathers name. I certainly had an ancestor who took her stepfathers name to put on the marriage certificate. Obviously having the same Surname as your mothers parents is not something you want as it is too obvious that your birth was illegitimate. You could try tracing his mothers whereabouts before his birth. You could strike lucky and find the name Broughton. Sometimes it happens.
