I am trying to trace my Brown family roots :D
I am stuck with my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather George Cooper Brown

What I do know
He Married Louisa (surname unknown)
He died and 1835 and is Buried int he Gainsborough Cemetery
(Source Burial Index)
Age at death was 59 which makes is Year of Birth 1775-1776
I know of two children
Sarah (1824)
Samuel (1828 ) My gr gr Grandfather
One census lists Margaret Brown as a daughter to Louisa, however this post dates his death

I have been unable to find their marriage or much else for that matter

The family stayed around Gainsborough
My gr Gr Grandfather, Samuel was a stone mason and he married Martha Cocking and Frances Iley

My gr Grandfather, Frank, was born in Gainsborough but then went to Leeds
He married Frances Isabel Walls who died in 1908, Frank then moved to Australia.

Any help would be greatly appreaciated

Bruce

Hello Bruce,

Is this a brick wall that has remained unsolved for 30 years?

Please provide as much as you know so we don't go over old ground and post info you have.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave not quite 30 years but for quite a long time every now and then I stumble across a bit more info
There is a bit of info on the LDS site but no more than I know
So what I know
Name George Cooper Brown
Sources: Burial Index. Burial Date 18th January 1835 at All Saints Gainsborough
From that It shows that he was 59 and calculated Death was 1776

I have Louisa's (Wife) Death certificate shows her as the widow of George Brown Waterman. She died 3/11/1886
She died in 1866 age at death 84 so calculated birth year 1782

She too is buried in the Gainsborough Cemetery
I have his son's (Samuel) Death marriage certificate which also shows father as George Brown Laborer
I have found the baptism record for Daughter Sarah which is for 6 Dec 1824

I have found what I believe to be Louisa and Family in the 1842 Census
In Gainsborough
Louisa Head
Sarah 10 Samuel 10 (which I doubt is correct)

The 1851 Census has them still in Gainsborough
Has Louisa born Wrabnell Kent
Has Sarah, Samuel
And now there is a Margaret 5 and a son-in-law George but listed as 8? both born in Hull Yorkshire

In 1861 still in Gainsborough
Louisa is now 76
Sarah is there 35 a nurse
and George is listed as a Grandson

I think that is all I know

thanks
Bruce

I note there is a Charles Cooper Brown that married 2nd May 1830. Is that a son or grandson.

I have connections to Browns of Torksey which is not far away. I remember seeing a Brown who was a waterman being conscripted into the Navy, and being in National Archives records (I think). Something about pay while he was their.

Wonder if this was your Brown and why you are having problems besides Brown being a common name. If he was away from home there could be wife children etc with birthplaces all over the place.
