James Buchanan b June 30 1876 Calivil, Durham Ox, Vic, Australia to John Robert and Mary Buchanan nee Hartle. What became of James, did he marry, when did he die and where? James had 2 siblings that I have traced, John George, (my Grandfather) came to NZ and Elizabeth married Bower, lived and died in Melbourne, Australia. This is a difficult nut to crack for me. That looks like Raywood-Durham Ox Road, Calivil, or a property called 'Durham Ox' in Calivil or a property called 'Calivil' in Durham Ox. Between Bendigo & Kerang.

I don't have the Victorian BMD on disc nor access to the Electoral Rolls apart from the index. I can see 4 Elizabeth BOWER in Victoria in 1903 E/R.

I'll see what else I can find.

Hello Kath,

A James BUCHANAN, farmer of Diggora (not far away to the east) died 1903 and he left a Will. I've read the Will and seen the death registration and it's a different James. There is the death of yet another James and that's not the one either. No sign of his death in Victoria unless there is some error in the registration.

Its a pity the QLD indexes dont have the district of where the event occured on them. Oh well now it appears he was in QLD it might make it easier to find some info on him.

Yes. I looked for spouse Phoebe in E/R and for her death in Qld. & NSW and didn't see her. I checked Ryerson too. There are 5 James in 5 different E/R Divisions in 1936 in Qld. I can't see his death in NLA.

Hi Dave,
I cant find Phoebe in the indexes or James in the papers neither. I didnt check births wonder if they had kids in QLD Will go and have a sticky now and see what comes up just on the off chance.

Went and checked but the births only go until 1914 and didnt find any with parents as James and Phoebe.

Dave and Gibbo, it's like watching a game of tennis reading the to and fro of your replies. I went to Vic BDM but was unsure about the marriage of James and Phoebe as the dates make James only 17 at the time, his brother and sister married much older. Not that that's a yardstick but was wondering? Thanks for the heads up to look in Queensland though.
