Mother - Mary I Burgess. (The I looks more like a J when compared)

I have come into this 24 posts in so forgive me if I am not up to speed with it all.
As far as I can see you want to know whether your father was actually the son of his mother's husband. You really will have to get his birth certificate. A married woman can have a child that is not her husband's but it will still have her married surname and she will put her maiden name on the birth certificate but the father's name column will be empty. You can not tell this just from the entry in the index, you will have to see the actual certificate.
The 1939 register of households will be free to FMP subscribers from Feb 16th, your father's name will be officially closed as he was born after 1915 but Sarah Burgess will be there and it will be interesting to see who she is living with. Viola Penketh (nee Burgess) is there in St Helens but it seems she didn't actually marry Wm Penketh till 1947 so that household will also be interesting !
Will let you know if I find anything after Feb 16th.

Looking at the Incoming Passenger lists, when Sarah and Viola arrived in 1916 they were going to stay at 13, Portland St Ashton under Lyne.
When they arrived in 1924 they went to the same address (actually now called back Portland St) and Sarah has initially been put down as Wilde then this crossed out and Burgess written over it.
Looks to me that she has separated from her husband and initially gave her maiden name of Wilde but when Viola was added to the list as Burgess Sarah's name of Wilde was queried.
No evidence of her returning to USA after that trip.

We are waiting for info from the 1929 birth reg to see what details there are for Kenneth's father James Burgess.
With James Henry Burgess ruled out can the census point to a likely birth reg for James out of about 6 possible in Lancs?
Can the right marriage for Joseph WILD(E) be found?
Probably other queries I should have thought of!

easily followed through censuses in Ashton but son James born earlier than expected :-

born Nov 28 1891, bapt 20.1.1892
James Burgess s.o. William & mary Jane, 13 Bennet St, minder.
Perhaps at marriage when James says aged 21 he just means of full age, i.e. over 21.
