Hi Lyn
William Burgess died Q1 1908 so his wife and youngest children left very soon after his death.
Viola was not living with her mother in St Helens in 1939, she was with a Sarah Freeman/Francis. It was common for family members to lodge nearby if it was too crowded at home, we may know more on 16th.
You may be interested in this report in the St Helens paper when Viola celebrated her 100th birthday last October :-

is the "Rosemary from Australia" your mother or aunt ?
Viola would have been 14 when your dad was born - is she able to remember whether her father was around at that time, or even whether he was ever around one she had returned to England ?
