I am researching my fathers family history as I said in my intro he was Herbert Thomas BUSTIN born 21 January 1913 .

I have now found out that his father was Cyril William Bustin his mother was Anne Neale.
His mother died soon after they moved from Binsey to Witham in about 1918 where both sets of grandparents lived.
About this time my fathers uncle was killed in the war. He is mentioned in a war memorial in wytham.

Could I please ask if anyone would be kind enough to help me to go back further as at the moment owing to having mobile
Access I can not subscribe to any sites even though I log in can't get to subscription page, also is there any way I can find
out how my Great Uncle HERBERT JOHN BUSTIN was killed in France in world war one.

Thank you I hope you can help

Hi Gwyneth,

Found an entry with CWG for a Herbert Thomas Bustin. age 36.
Son of Mr & Mrs H. Bustin. of Wytham, Oxford. and husband of Rosanna Bustin of 22, Duke St. Botley, Oxford.

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=729009

But no Herbert John Bustin.

Hi Steve.

Thank you so very much for that, yes that would be my great uncle, with your
Help he has now become more than a name from my mothers remembered past.
Sorry about the mix up with the middle name. Just goes to prove other sites can
Be wrong.

Now to my question have you any idea why he would join the Lancashire regiment
Not an Oxford or Berkshire one, it does seem rather far from home when transport was
Not so good and a lot slower. Any ideas?

Thank you again now just to trace my other ancestors. There is a crack in that wall!

Gwenyth.

Gwenyth.
Soldiers were generally put where they were needed, and rarely had a choice.
Replacements for those killed was usually the case.
Also if your Gt. Uncle had special skills, ie. driver, gamekeeper, blacksmith, mechanic, could also determine where he went.
A soldier would sometimes 'follow' in fathers footsteps, so to speak.

My G.father was in the Royal Artillery WW1, and my Dad and his brother followed in his footsteps in WW2.

I had Gt.Uncle's who were posted locally and 100's of miles away.

Could be any number of reasons.

Hi Steve.

Thank you for that you are. So kind. Sorry but I have no idea of my great uncles date of birth.
My mother tells me that my father showed her his uncles memorial in Whytham church although
I can find no mention of it on the Whytham web site.

According to my mother who has my fathers birth certificate I have his D.O.B right. My mother was
Twenty five years younger.

Thanks for your kind help.

My Grand father and Great Uncle Herbert Thomas Bustin born about 1882 killed age 36 in france
In 1918, if I am right this should give me information on my Gt Grandfather.

Thank you
Gwenyth

Looking on the 1891 and 1901 census can only find a Herbert Bustin born 1886 Cowley St John with parents Edwin and Emily.

Hi Julie

Thank you for that.. I am attempting to work out if my Granddad CYRIL WILLIAM
BUSTIN and dads uncle HERBERT THOMAS BUSTIN were brothers. If they were
Then the H BUSTIN who is listed as the uncles father would be my Great granddad

Sorry but have access problems so can't look myself

Thank you again

Hi Julie

Thanks for trying. It looks like its back to the
Drawing board! Never mind tomorrow is another
Day. I sometimes think we should have pedigrees
Like the dogs. But it would not be as much fun or
As challenging.

Thank you for your kind help

Hi friends.

As I am unable to order my fathers birth certificate on line do you know if I can order it
At my local registry office? I will at least know my Granddads full name then.

Thanks
Gwenyth

Hi Friends

Thanks for the link Steve but they only seem to cover the North Wales area not Abingdon /Wytham

I am wondering if someone could look at the census for the Wytham near oxford area for 1881 and 1891 and let
Me know what children HENRY BUSTIN had I think he was father to HERBERT THOMAS BUSTIN 1883-1918
(my fathers uncle) so therefore possibly father to CYRIL WILLIAM BUSTIN (my grandfather) as I am wondering
If the names on the Birth Certificate are being miss read by my mother. She lives 200 miles away.

Thank you

Gwenyth

Hi Gwyneth,

Found this death for a Ann Bustin born abt 1879 death registered 1914, district
Headington, Apr/May/Jun 1/4 (though its a few years from your info)

The marriage certificate for Herbert Thomas Bustin will confirms his fathers name (Cyril William Bustin).

Just jumping in on your interesting thread and I found a Herbert Bustin in 1901 with his father Henry and Mother Eliza, sisters Elsie and Alice. They are in Wytham, (plus an Edwin .....? who is a nephew)

Hi Julie

That sounds like it could be my Grandmother. I do know that she died when
My father was very young. My father took me when I was a child to wytham
To look for her grave but could not find it and the records were mixed up
So of no help.

I don't have access to any certificates to look if I have Granddads name right
He was married twice the first time in the 1930s I think. He had two sons Jim
And Perce I do know they were in the RAF when I was born. He married my mother
In 1957 feb I think. Hopefully this might help trace who Granddad was and so to
Great Granddad and beyond.

Thanks for your patience and kindness.

Gwenyth
