I was recently very surprised to discover a link between my Harrington Family Tree and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla.
She and I both descend from Isaac Harrington born 1685.
Isaac Harrington and many generations of his family lived in Great Maplestead, Essex.
He married Martha Elliston on 12th September 1710 at St Giles Church, Great Maplestead.

So, if any of your Harrington relatives are from Great Maplestead, Essex, there is a good chance you too are related to Camilla.
I would love to hear from you. :)

Hi,

I too am descended from Isaac Harrington, he was my 5 x great grandfather, and I am 2nd cousin once removed to Camilla. My line of descent is:

Isaac H, Philip H, Isaac H, Isaac H, Henry H, Cecil H, Charles H.

Where are you from Isaac (b. 1685)?

welcome Duncan and hi,

How exciting to get a responce so quickly.

I too am descended Isaac, Philip, Isaac, but then Joseph b 1794, George b 1829, Thomas b 1863 and Sydney b 1892 was my Grandfather.

Happy to swap info in more detail. Obviously I know of your Isaac b 1791, (my Joseph's brother) but nothing of your side after him.

I have been to Great Maplestead and wandered around the lanes. I found a cottage that one of the Harringtons rented and the field opposite where they worked the land.
I visited St Giles church, found one Harrington grave belonging to Theophilus Harrington, but could find no connection between him and our Harrington's. (He appeared to come from Little Maplestead)

I think I found the Vicarage in Great Maplestead, where one of my ancestors lived and looked after the Gardens and I have visited the Family Records Centre in Chelmsford, Essex which was very interesting.

How far have you got with your research?

Good to hear from you. Sarah.

So good to hear from you. I calculate that we are fourth cousins once
removed. I have a fairly full history from Isaac (b 1791 or 1792). I
also have down as far as Sidney Harrington, your grandfather, but there
my information stops. I have been researching for three years and I now
have just over 600 in my tree, but of course not all of them would be
close enough to interest you.

The connection to Camilla has been a great help as there has been a
lot of professional research into her ancestors, much of which was
published on the web. Unfortunately the main site has now been removed
but I had the foresight to take a paper copy before it went. Camilla's
grandmother, Margot Harrington and my father Charles Harrington were
first cousins - their fathers were brothers - so Margot was my first
cousin once removed. Camilla's father, Major Bruce Shand who died in
2006 was my second cousin, which makes Camilla my second cousin once
removed.

I. too, have visited Great Maplestead. I know of Theophilus Harrington
but can't find the connection. But given that Harrington's lived in the
area for hundreds of years they are all inter-related in some way. The
situation with the vicarages in GM was confusing because there were two
parishes. St. Giles was the parish church of GM parish and it had a
vicarage next to the church. However, there was another vicarage in GM
and this was where the Harringtons lived. Within GM stood the "Diocesan
House of Mercy for Fallen Woman", a home set up by the diocese of
Rochester, Kent, where single mothers could be sent away to the wilds
of Essex to have their babies. Often they would remain there as inmates
for years. Because it was owned by Rochester diocese it did not form
part of the surrounding St. Giles parish. Instead it had its own
church, St. Mary's, with its own vicarage. This building still remains
as Vicarage House. The old House of Mercy has long since disappeared
but the Coach House, next door to Vicarage House remains. It was here
that Isaac Harrington (b. 1791/2) worked as coachman.

I will happily share with you all that I have discovered and hope that
you will return the favour. There is far too much to pass through this
web site. If you want contact me direct at duncanharrington@tiscali.co.

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to this website, organisers and members.:)

Since joining, apart from all the extra info I have gained, I have made contact with cousins I never knew I had.

And in turn, they have opened up a whole new World and branches to my Tree.

So, I am truely grateful to FHUK.
Keep up the good work and long may it continue.

Hi,

I think my 8th Great grandfather was William Harrington b1660 Pebmarsh. Jacob, one of his sons, was born in Little Maplestead in 1708. He married Jane Pavett. Do you know of a connection between any of my folks above and your Isaac Harrington born 1685?

Thanks,
John Harrington

Dear John

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post.

I'm afraid I do not recognise any of the names you give and therefore have no evidence for a connection between your Harrinngton's and mine.

Sorry, I can not be more helpful.

Kind regards,

Sarah.

I have just started researching my family, which includes the Harrington's of Great Maplestead and have come across your correspondence on the familyhistory site and I think there may be a link, but as I am a beginner you will no doubt be able to correct me if necessary.

My grandmother Florence Mary, born 1889, had a brother Sidney, as well as Elsie & Hilda sisters; her father was Thomas 1863 - 1912, son of George b 1831, I believe son of Nathaniel b 1786 and that's as far as I've got. Would that lead back to Theophilus?????

Do you think you may be able to shed any more light?

I would be most grateful for any assistance you might be able to provide.

Many thanks

Ray Harrington-Lowe

Hello Ray

It's very exciting to hear from you. It has been sometime since I have visited this site.

I am sure your family tree and mine are linked. I believe your Grandmother was married to Bert Lowe (hence your name) and her brother Sydney (with a y) was my Grandfather. That makes us 2nd cousins, I think.

I have lots of information I could share with you about Sydney and would love to hear all about your Grandmother. I believe I have a photo of her.

I would also like more information about Hilda and Elsie. And I believe there was another sister, Edna Lily, born aprox 1906.

Your Grandmother's father was indeed Thomas b.1863, son of George but I have George's father as Joseph b.1794.

Nathaniel and Theophilus are related I'm sure but as yet I have been unable to make the connection.

When I went back from Joseph b. 1794, his father was Isaac b. 1763. This Isaac is the connection with Camilla.

So you too are connected to Camilla. You may or may not be happy about this. I wrote to her and recieved a very nice reply.

I look forward to hearing from you again and learning more about your Grandmother.

Regards Sarah.

Hi Sarah

Exciting indeed! Very many thanks for your information. As I said I had rather hit a brick wall and was getting a bit frustrated as I didn't seem to be getting anywhere.

You are absolutely bang on, Florence did marry Bertram Lowe. I fancy Edna Lily may have died in infancy.

I am attending a wedding this w/e in Woodbridge & will be trying to find time to have a quick look around the Gt Maplestead area - I'll report back!

I would like to establish direct contact - am I allowed to give you my e-mail address? As a new boy I am not sure of the protocol.

Best wishes

Ray

I may have misspoken. I was excited to meet fellow Harringtons I misread a few things. The Isaac Harrington (1664-1727) I have is the son of Benjamin Harrington 1618-1694). Sorry. Are you also direct descendants of:

Oswulf De Haverington
Birth 1151 in Harrington, Cumberland, England
Death 1181 in England

This is the furthest I have been able to go back.

Hi DRHarrington,

In case you've not come across it here is a link you may find interesting: http://dgmweb.net/DNA/Misc/HarringtonDNA-results-HgI2b1.html

Enjoy your research!
