Me again

For some reason my full reply did not submit correctly.

Here I go again......

Take a look at this site, it shows all the medals issued to the regiment

http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/british_regiment/northumberland_fusiliers.htm

He and the regiment were in India between 1880-1890 and were issued with the The India General Service Medal 1854 - 1895

Details of which can be seen here
http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/indiageneralservice1854.htm

I hope this helps

Best Regards - Ron

Thanks for that. Can you answer another query? Why would a man from Shropshire be in the Northumberland regiment.? And is it possible to get army records on line with the number we have for him?

Yes, being your grandfather will make a difference.

You will need to complete the kinship form that is available on the veterans site and follow the instructions.

Just had a quick look at the 1891 census, and there are six George Fewtrell all born in Shropshire

what was your grandmothers name

Best regards - Ron

Annie Weaver but they were not married until 1894. the only georges I can find seem to have no connection.
I have the 1901 where he was in Lancaster with his wife and son and 1n 1861 census as a boy in Shropshire but cannot find him with his father in 1871 onwards. did the army do a census?

he was also known as george edward

No sorry that is not him. I have his family alive and well in Madley. His sibs are there but not him. he would be 14/15 by then. He does not reappear til his marriage so because of the medal and the fact that when he died his was noted to have 'old malaria' I am assuming he was in the army. David
