I'm looking for James Fletcher B 23rd July 1907 in Sheffield, Yorkshire in the Canadian census for 1921 & possibly 1931. He emigrated with his family in 1913, (Father Levi, mother Mary & brothers Frances & William) and returned to England on an unknown date but he's listed on the 1939 register in Sheffield.

Canada 1926 census, Levi and family are near the top and James in down near bottom of the page.
Levi and Mary had a couple more kids by the looks, Clifford and Irene.

You can get the actual record up free just by registering with Familysearch if you haven't already registered with them..

Thanks gibbo, both of those are a very big help.

I'm not finding anything after 1926 so i'm assuming between 1926 and 1930/1931[next census] he was back in the UK. But then again i shouldn't assume things.

I haven't been unable to find any departure records from Canada.

Did the whole family move back?

As far as I'm aware James was the only one to move back and yes as he's not on the 1931 we have to presume between 1926/31. Unfortunately here in the UK the 1931 census was lost during WW2 so finding him between then and 1939, (the next "census" as such) is a bit problematical.

Is there anything in particular your looking for or just general information on him.

I was just reading about the Sheffield Blitz, i had never heard about it before so i went googling.

Hi gibbo, It's just general. Long story short, I'm helping my brother in law out who's a local historian and doing a talk on the victims etc of the Marples Hotel bombing.

I found this but as i'm not a paid member i can not get any further information to see if it might be James arriving back in the UK. The date of birth and year of arrival are blurred out. Hopefully someone who is a member of Ancestry might be kind enough to have a look. Probably a long shot.

Well that has muddied the waters somewhat!!!!! According to that, and if it is him?, he was travelling form Canada, with last permanent residence as Hong Kong and was a Royal Marine going to barracks in Chatham, Kent.???? The arrival date of 16th July 1940 does put him in England and did he go back to Sheffield to see family?
What is interesting, if this is James, is that his death after the bombing of the Marples is listed in the "civilian deaths" listing.

I've managed to establish that the 2 James' are in fact different people.

What was his address on the 1939 register?

When he died his address was 51 Kent Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield.

Just another long shot if he was stable with an address if he could be picked up on an electoral roll and work backward it might help narrow the years of arrival down??

On the 1939 he was living at a different address to the one at his death. I've asked my brother in law to take a look at the electoral next time he's at the archives to see if he's registered and where/when.
