Hello,

Another go with this family. This is the one previously found:

1841
HO107 Piece 255 Book 10 Folio 20 Page 34
Civil Parish: Tiverton
Hundred: Tiverton
County: Devon
Registration District: Tiverton and Dulverton
Sub-RD: Tiverton
Edwin Carter 25 Devon, England
Mary Ann Carter 30
Jane Carter 6
Ellen Carter 7 Mo

Edwin CARTER & Mary Ann.

Children all born in Plymouth:

Ellen b. 22 Sep 1831 ** EDIT: died in 1832.
Edwin John b. 28 Sep 1833
William James b. 29 Jun 1835 ** or 1837 ???
Mary Ellen b. 24 Jun 1836
Jane b. 16 Feb 1840 ** or 1839 ???

I think the author of one tree is confusing birth and baptism dates so I'm not 100% sure of the birth order of the last four. I think Mary Ellen becomes Ellen and the youngest then becomes Mary.

Given all but one of these children were in England until 1854-1857 I'd like a look up please for the family in 1841 and 1851.

Regards,

Dave

This is said to be the death of William James:

11368/1917 CARTER WILLIAM - EDWIN - MARY A - COROWA

That's in a small town in NSW and I can't find a notice in newspaper so I have no age at death.

The tree does not indicate when William arrived in NSW but it was before 1866.

Lots of William CARTERs born in Devon so the one I've found in shipping records is probably not the right one (age is 3 years out) but I will check it out next time I'm at the library.

CARTER William 23 Wacousta 1855 Sydney and/or Newcastle Reel 2137, [4/4791]; Reel 2472, [4/4957]

It would seem that the 'Edwin' in 1841 in post #1 is Edward in later census - master cordwainer and widower by 1851.

Probably very few Edwin CARTER to Mary A. marriages in Devon. I can't find any on FS. I can't find any baptisms for children to Edwin & Mary A. in:

England, Plymouth and West Devon, Parish Registers, 1538-1912

Mary A (nee STOCKDALE) died in 1898 in USA.

I can't find the marriage of James MARTIN to Mary Ann CARTER but the children fit for this to be Mary Ann:

1851
HO107 1878/36/21
Address: Prince Rock, The Martyr, Plymouth
James Martin 39 occ Quarryman b. Modbury Devon
Mary Ann Martin 45 b. Penryn, Cornwall
Edwin C Carter 18 occ Stonemason
Ellen C 16
William 14
Jane 12
Mary 10
James Martin 5
All children born Plymouth, Devon

They are hiding in 1841.

We have to start again almost with this one. I knew the tree was suspect but if shipping record is correct parents are Joseph & Sarah:

Arrived 2 Jan 1855
William 23 Blacksmith - Plymouth Devonshire Joseph & Sarah living at Plymouth - CE Read & write - No relations in colony - Good None - £5 A. I. Act.

So, I don't have a death after all.

Possible, gibbo. :)

If some of the tree is correct them William's middle name was James.

CARTER (Mr. W. J.) Funeral notice 11MAY1892 Funeral late of Leichhardt Sydney Morning Herald 10MAY1892

The other question has to be asked:

Have I got the right shipping record for the William CARTER in my tree?

What do I know is correct? Not much.

NSW Birth 5118/1866 CARTER HENRY S - WILLIAM - MARIA - HAY

New South Wales Police Gazette 1895
Henry Stewart Carter, summoned before the Narrandera Bench, by Sergeant Barnett and Constable Wisbey, Narrandera Police, for being the owner of a slaughter-house, used for the slaughter of animals intended for human food, did have in his possession two animals, to wit, bullocks for sale, while suffering from a disease known as lumpy jaw or tuberculosis, has been fined £6 and £15s. 10d. costs. Paid. Monety of fine to Police Reward Fund.

1903 NSW Electoral Roll - BLAND - NARRANDERA POLLING-PLACE
CARTER Henry Stewart, Larmer-street, publican

The newspaper notice says 11 not 16 May but that's the only W CARTER who died in Sydney region that year.

Are the others all relatives?
