Looking for :( information about William Dakin and Harriet  there is nothing on freeregs. I think Williams parents are George and Maria Dakin (nee Topliss)

DAKIN, William Head M 45 1826 Castle Donington Leicestershire Boatman
DAKIN, Harriott Wife F 45 1826 Castle Donington Leicestershire
plus children

bmd index, gives me two 'Harriet's
Marriages Sep 1848
ROPER Harriet Shardlow 19 535
TWELLS Harriet Shardlow 19 535

Hi Foxy

I take it you're trying to identify which Harriet William married. I go for Harriet Roper.
If you look at 1841 census for her born 1827 Castle Donington, the return on A----Y gives her by herself. BUT If you look at the image she is with her parents and siblings. Note the males are boatmen and the females Lace workers.
William was a boatman and in 1861 when William was not with her, Harriet was a Lace Embroiderer. Also if you look at others on the 1841 page, there is a John Dakin 10 and a family of called Topliss.
Checking Harriet Twells, she was a Dressmaker so I don't think it's her.
Not 100% but quite convincing

There seems to be several Dakins in Castle Donington at that time and maybe they are related, I don't know:confused:

I have William Dakin's parents as George and Maria Dakin ( nee Topliss) and I know occ's do change from census to census, depending on work available to them...so I have to say Steve I don't know if that is the right family

Dave Thankyou for checking those, if possible I would love the information you have found as I only have the very basics: 1871 census, can't find them on the 1881 ( got daughter Hannah lodging with a family in 'Cas Don' and is a Chevener aged 17 yrs RG number:RG11 Piece:3384 Folio:4 Page:2)...glad someone has the same 'logical' working out as me, that makes me feel better:biggrin:

I don't know anything about a 'John Dakin' or anything about the 'Topliss family' at all...so any details, anything you find that you could give me are useful

Children who are on the 1871 census along with both parents William/Harriet
all born in Castle Donington
DAKIN, Mary Daughter F 22 1849 Leicestershire Paper sorter
DAKIN, Betsy Daughter F 18 1853 Leicestershire Paper sorter
DAKIN, Louisa Daughter F 12 1859 Leicestershire Silk winder
DAKIN, William Son M 10 1861 Leicestershire scholar
DAKIN, Hanah Daughter F 6 1865 Leicestershire
DAKIN, Eliza Daughter F 4 1867 Leicestershire

Hannah moved to Warwickshire and then to Leicester ( St Margarets) later on.

A boatman? Presumerably the 'Trent' or the 'Soar'...this is a new occupation for any of my ancestors...which is great.

I'm agreeing with you Dave.:).......Harriet Twells married John Basford.;)

Just added a bit more evidence.redf)

Ahh sorry, I see now. My mind takes a long time to deviate from the path it's on. Its called old age. ;)

Foxy. I think Steve has the right family in 1861. Harriet 34 Lace Embroiderer is with Mary 12, Betsy 8, Harriet 6, and Louisa 2. I haven't checked for William yet, he could be out on the river somewhere
1851 HO107/2140/110/6 William 24 Boatman, Harriet 24, Mary 2 and Eliza 4.

On IGI William son of George and Maria (Topliss) has siblings - George c16/7/1828, Eliza c19/2/1833 - d 23/7/1833, Eliza 29/6/1834, James 4/8/1844

With your help in finding out Harriets maiden name I have been doing some IGI work ( which of course needs checking first) but it seems that SarahTwells is Harriett Ropers grandmother....so your 'finds' are not just clarification of Harriet's maiden name
