Castlespails, Old Monkland, Lanark

My 3x Great Grandfather, William Lang, was recorded on the 1881 Census as living on Castle Staples Farm in Old Monkland, Lanark. It took me a while to figure out that Castle Staples Farm was probably Castlespails Farm...but that didn't get me any closer to figuring out what it actually was. He was listed as a farmer of 35 acres, 20 arable. Earlier information, on the 1871 Census, gave his residence as Old Monkland, Gartsherrie, Blackbrae. I did find, somewhere in my research, that Blackbrae was (possibly) a cottage owned by William Lang. Now I'm completely confused.
When William Lang died in 1887, his place of death was recorded as, again, Castlespails Farm.
Are these places one and the same?
Any input or suggestions from forum members would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that the Lang family lived on Castlespails Farm for several generations. I would really be interested in whatever information you have on your part of the Lang family.
My 2x gg, Margaret Lang, was born in 1828 to William Lang and Janet Clark. When Janet died in the early 1840's, William married Agnes Gray. Margaret bore a son out of wedlock (William), then married Andrew McGown. William used the McGown surname following the marriage though it is certain that Andrew was NOT his father.. William named his daughter ( my grandmother) Margaret Lang McGown, and he moved his family to Canada in 1905, following the death of his wife.
I hope that's not too confusing. Just wanted you to know my background and how I'm connected to the Langs. The surname has not been forgotten: my brother named his youngest daughter Alexandra Lang!

Thank you for the further information regarding the Langs. My research revealed that James Lang (b1775) moved to the farm from Kirkintilloch where he had worked the textile industry and he appears to be the first Lang living at the farm. I need to look at the parish registers for further details of marriage and earlier connections.

My father's elder brother moved to Canada in the late 1920s and worked as a mining engineer in northern Canada before the family eventually moved to Winnipeg. His daughter's married name is Buck but we have lost contact in recent times, I think due to a change of address.

You might be interested. to learn that the farm was recently sold and is now an important equestrian centre.

Isn't this fascinating?

Do you, by chance, know the name of James Lang's wife? I had Margaret Gray...but can't, now, determine how I came to that conclusion. It could also be Ann Gartshore...
Also, do you know if James died at Castlespails? There is a record of an 81 year old James Lang dying in Kirkintilloch in 1855.
I'm glad to hear about the farm being turned into an Equestrian Centre. At least it's maintained some of its farm roots.

James Lang's wife was Margaret Gray and she was born in Gartcosh, a tiny village close to the farm where they eventually lived. This might have caused confusion.

Thank you for the link to the Winnipeg family I will research.

I am now working on family links prior to 1775 but records are a bit inconsistent.I will keep you informed.

I was Heather Lang before I got married. This thread is very old but hopefully people will get email alerts.

My grandfather was David Lang, son of Robert Lang and Janet Duffy.
My grandmother was Agnes Lang (Nee MacLuskie), the daughter of Mary Lang and James Macluskie.

Robert Lang and Mary Lang were siblings and children of William Lang and Agnes (nee Gray)

Basically, my father's parents/my grandparents were first cousins. That makes me a Lang through and through with William Lang being by great great grandfather both through my father's father and his mother.

I'm super late to this thread. :):)

I've just recently started on my geneology journey again after a break of about 10 years or so. I had a tree of about 3000 people and I had a computer failure and lost the lot. Months of work down the drain.

Anyway I fit in somewhere with the Craig's and Lang's too and yes I was just getting myself confused with one of the marriages until I saw the register entry showed them as cousins. Got really confusing as Jean Craig used the middle name Lang from her mothers side (although she wasn't given it at birth) but she then married Robert Lang so her name was Jean Lang Lang then? I'm sure she probably dropped using it anyway. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Suppose it depends what William LANG we are referring to each time but the one in the attached file, father of Jean LANG, is my great great great grandfather.
