Hello everybody and thanks for having me in the community.
I'm struggling to trace an ancestor and wonder if any of the more experienced researchers can suggest further ways to try and trace the birth.
Catherine married Robert John Snowdon in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18th Oct 1871. The marriage certificate gives her name as Catherine McDermit and age as 21, so c.1850 and states her father's name as John McDermit, a bricklayer.
Subsequent census returns state her birthplace as Newcastle upon Tyne.
I've managed to trace a baptism record dated 14 Nov 1852 in Newcastle upon Tyne for Catherine Anne McDermott, father John McDermott and mother Bridget U which seems very promising but nothing much is coming in the GRO indexes for a birth.
Census returns prior to the marriage are not throwing up much of help. In the 1871 census, 6 months before the marriage I can find a John & Bridget McDermott at Stepenson Street, Willington, Tynemouth which is not far away but sadly no Catherine. This John & Bridget were born in Ireland and given their birth dates of 1835 and 1834 respectively they would have been fairly young when having Catherine if they are indeed her parents.
I'm beginning to wonder if Catherine may have in fact been born in Ireland and the young parents fled to the UK after the birth?
Can anybody offer any help or suggestions please?
