GRO index gives mothers maiden name McIntay.
Thanks both. I've looked into this Catherine before. I'll probably end up getting a certificate to double check but pretty sure that that this particular Catherine turns up in the 1861 census with her father Patrick and not John.

Just to update this, I now have the birth certificate for the Auckland, Durham 1851 birth (mmn McIntay) and the father is indeed Patrick McDermott and not John as I thought. This family stayed very stable around Crook, Durham.

So back to square one in trying to find the birth or census records pre 1871 of Catherine Ann McDermott, father John McDermott, bricklayer.

That Alice may be the Alice that died in 1859 Newcastle Upon Tyne. Surname McDermid (a possible error in surname), though recorded on freebmd and the GRO site as McDermid. She was aged 2.
The surname McDermid actually appears on Catherine’s marriage certificate so likely that’s how they thought to spell it.

Can anybody find this family in 1861. Tried every variation of spelling I can come up with to no avail :(
I've been through 376 households in the same street in 1861 and sadly there were not there then.
I need to try and tie Catherine in to this family and unfortunately she was working elsewhere as a servant for this 1871 census. I know it's the family I'm looking for as Bridget reverts to her maiden name of Campbell when she ends up in the local workhouse in 1891.

Hi,

The family maybe under the surname of Mc Aumond in 1861 on the familysearch site. Actually I‘m quite sure this is the family. The actual census image needs to be looked at.

They are under McAumond on another site And on Annestry under McAermond. Just realised father down as James. This family are in the right area.
Excellent. Many thanks Julie. Ancestry wasn't even bringing them up as McAermond in the searches. Got them on FMP under McAumond though.

Still no luck finding any kind of birth record for Catherine. Gut feeling is that this is the right family that Julie found in the 1861 census but any kind of birth record is proving elusive. The fathers name James doesn't worry me unduly as it's given correctly as John in 1871/81/91. I've managed to trace the GRO birth for Edward born in 1855 which was registered as McDormant but nothing for Catherine with a similar name.

If mother Bridget's age is correct on this 1861 census then she would only have been 17 or so when having Catherine (she was baptised 1852) and given she was born in Ireland I'm beginning to wonder if she was 'sent away' and the birth wasn't even registered or possibly even born in Ireland before leaving.... Maybe even registered in her maiden name Campbell which will be my next searches.....

Catherines birth may not have been registered, even though registration started in 1837. They may not have realised that births needed to be registered. I have one with no children’s birth registrations, just christenings. Like you mothers maiden taken from marriage, mine was pre registration for the marriage.
