Hello,

The name is RITCHIE.

1901
Civil Parish: Dirleton
County: East Lothian
Address: Eassfield Cottage
RITCHEL David head 1850 age 51 Contractor (cartiny) Dairyman Dirleton, Haddington
RITCHEL Catherine Moffatt wife 1847 age 54 Bathgate, Linlithgow
RITCHEL Marion Gardiner daur 1881 age 20 Dirleton, Haddington
RITCHEL Robert Gardiner son 1885 age 16 Dirleton, Haddington
RITCHEL Catherine daur 1887 age 14 Dirleton, Haddington

The 2x Catherine made it to Australia. The one born 1887 Dirleton, Haddington (now called East Lothian) married in NSW in 1911.

They arrived about 1909 I think. ???

Marion also arrived married (to William MARSHALL) with 2 children Catherine, the one b. abt 1899 and William born later.

Regards,

Dave

Ok, thanks gibbo. :)

RITCHIE C 1887 F 1909 London Australia Sydney
RITCHIE Child Unknown M 1909 London Australia Sydney
RITCHIE Unknown F 1909 London Australia Sydney

So far I can't find the marriage to William MARSHALL or a birth/baptism for the children. Also curious why Marion is not listed as married with her married name when Catherine b. abt 1899 is probably her daughter.

Catherine born 1899 has the same last name as the rest of the family. Maybe Marion was single when she had her.

Yes. I looked for the marriage from 1885 - 1905 on FS. I'll have to try SP.

This is the one b. 1887:

Marriage 4310/1911 WHITTLE ALFRED E - RITCHIE CATHERINE - SYDNEY

and she is in the Electoral Rolls:

Catherine Moffat Whittle 1930 New South Wales Macquarie

I can't see another Catherine Moffat ... or a death so far.

Marriage 12864/1919 HODGES WILLIAM H J - MARSHALL CATHERINE M - CHATSWOOD

Catherine Moffat Hodges 1954 New South Wales Bennelong

HODGES Catherine Moffat Death notice 22JUN1979 Death 80 late of Orange Sydney Morning Herald 23JUN1979

Death 14367/1979 HODGES CATHERINE MOFFAT - WILLIAM - MARION

This one fits:

Death 10340/1959 WHITTLE CATHERINE MOFFAT - DAVID - CATHERINE - PENRITH

But is this the right death?

13742/1916 MARSHALL WILLIAM - WILLIAM - ESTHER - CHATSWOOD

MARSHALL William Death notice 17AUG1916 Death 39 late of Gordon Sydney Morning Herald 19AUG1916

I still can't find the marriage of William MARSHALL to Marion G RITCHIE.

Marion Gardiner Marshall, born in Scotland abt 1881 was my Great Great Grandmother. She came to Australia with her daughter Catherine Moffat Marshall born around 1899. In 1919 she married Ernest Edward Pearce, a petty criminal, however, the marriage was not a happy one and he died in 1925.

In later life, she moved in with my Grandmother (her Grand Daughter - daughter of Catherine Marshall who married William H J Hodges, a WW1 veteran of Flanders Fields) Jean Hodges. She lived with Jean and my father who referred to her as "Big Mum" until her death in 1964 in Artarmon NSW.

We believe she was buried at Gore Hill Cemetary in St Leonards NSW. We are currently substantiating that with cemetery officials as the grave is believed to be unmarked.

As she was close to my father, we are looking to have a headstone made for the grave, and will post pictures if you are still interested.

Hello and welcome to the Forum

Thanks for the information.

The Gore Hill Cemetery records are in books, on film and on a card index held by the Library in Chatswood which I visit about once a week. I can look that one up, perhaps on Wednesday.

I can't see a death in 1925 for Ernerst. Did he die in NSW?

Did William MARSHALL senior ever make it to Australia?

Did Marion actually marry William? I have so far not found the marriage.

I checked the film in the library for Gore Hill Cemetery and Marion is listed out of sequence. Her details were added later under those for William. The film contains slighly different information than the cards. It contained:

MARSHALL William buried 19.8.16 Age 39 No. 1722
PEARCE Marion Gardiner buried 6.10.1964 Whiting St Artarmon Age 85 Undertaker Bruce MAURER No. 1722

I also checked the books on Gore Hill Cemetery in the library and there is no entry in the index for either of them for any headstone inscription. If there is a headstone and any inscription can't be read then the book says so. I also looked in the sequence book and there is no mention of any headstone. That does not rule out the possibilty there may have been one. I have not personaly walked that section of the cemetery yet.

Hi Miss11, Hoping to correct a little bit about Minnie (Marion Gardiner Marshall). She married Ernie Pearce in March 1921 at Gordon and Ernie was not a petty criminal. He previously worked as orchardist with his well-known father Edward. After marriage Ernie worked as a carrier. At the time he died 1957 he and Minnie lived 31 Bruce Street, Killara.
