It is possible in a lot of cases to find the cause of death of someone before the advent of civil registration in 1837.
Some parish burial registers can give a cause of death. I have come across this in Suffolk and Durham. In London my ancestor Samuel Auber died in 1827 and the burial register doesn't give cause of death but there was a fee book of burials which give cause of death.
Also wills can hint towards a cause of death such as "sound in mind but weak in body" or even can note things such as the testators ill health.
Plus newspaper obituaries can give a cause of death and any surviving hospital or workhouse records before 1837 can give a cause of death.
