Census-addresses.

Is it possible to put specific house to a name. On the census sheet's 1st column you have No.of schedule and 2nd column you have road/street/name of house.
What is the method of filling a census form as regards a specific house in relation to the next. Do they"walk" up one side of the street or left to right whilst "moving" forward.

All you can see in the 1st column is ditto,s

Am I making any sense.

Next year I am hoping to return to England to make a video diary of my ancesters places of birth.
I know the area very well and have tracked streets where my relatives lived.

They probably walked up one side of the tsreet then the other as opposed to keeping nipping across the road and increase the risk of getting run down by a horse and carriage or carman delivering beer lol.

Some had their own ways of doing the schedules though. They may well have did one house at one end then walked to the other end rather than the next house.

Hi Ben, Yes I think you maybe right. I was shooting in the dark with this one.
I have a few ancestors with specific house names, like Rose Cottage, and Red Lion Cottage, and they are still there. The rest I will have to make calculated guesses. I don't think I will be too far away.

Village houses didn't always have numbers and if they did the census enumerator didn't always note that down, only in large towns and cities. But it is good to look for mentionings of the pub or the local shop and if your ancestors house is enumerated next to the pub then it probably was.

I have spent 4+ hours this morning, doing an 1891census 'tour' of my, and most of my rellies, home town. It was just like having a walk up one side and coming back down the other.
I could place quite a few of the dwellings. Most of the shops etc. were still there when i left there 30yrs. ago. Most of them were 3rd and 4th generation.
Sadly, none of them exist now.:'(
Whilst on the 'tour' I found the parents of my family's Milkman. All their children never married, 3 brothers and a sister. Their actual milking parlour was just off the town centre. I can remember them driving cattle down the High St. to be milked, and then back again. And this was 1960ish, and the town was always quite busy.
I often wondered why everyone was waiting with bucket and shovel. Now I know.
