Hello,

No 6 Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Macquarie Street Parramatta
17th September 1856
William Channell Widower 8 3 North Petherton Somerset England Farmer 46 Camden Camden Thomas Channell & Elizabeth (maiden name Therkles ?[I can't read it - may not start with T]) Farmer
Naomi Oliver Widow 6 1 Uddermore Sussex England - 44 Camden Camden Richard Freeman & - (maiden name Bates) Labourer
By me Thomas Adams
Both x mark
Witnesses: William Stimson, Harriet Oliver

Witness Harriet is Naomi's daughter. Harriet married one month later.

So we have:

William CHANNELL b. abt 1810 North Petherton Somerset

A widower - 8 children, 3 deceased - parents Thomas CHANNELL & Elizabeth ??

Naomi FREEMAN b. abt 1812 Udimore, Sussex

A widow - 6 children, 1 deceased - parents Richard FREEMAN & Maria BATES

I can't find either baptism or either marriage of parents.

I can't find a marriage for William that stands out in England or Australia. I can't see a death for his spouse 1840 -1856 in NSW. So, did he come to Australia after his spouse died in England?

Regards,

Dave

I know from my FURNER branch that very few Sussex records are on-line yet but is it the same for Somerset?

I have no reason to doubt the details in that 1856 NSW marriage. I have nothing in family history to indicate that either would have reason not to give genuine info re pob and parents.

Hi Dave,

Could Williams mothers surname be Frackrel? A submitted entry has a marriage for a Thomas Channell spouse Elizabeth Frackrel 31 Aug 1800 North Petherton. Another submitted entry this William died abt 1884 born abt 1808 of Camden New South Wales - Spouse Ann - Marriage Camden New South Wales.

Hello Julie,

Thanks.

That's my transcription from the film of the register held at the State Library. Can't photograph screen or print from screen. I'd have to go back and view the film again to check. I'll try to do that Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

If the name is Frackrel it's possible the way that name would sound that it won't be in the register as exactly that either. But I will check.

Regards,

Dave

Another take on the name is FERKLE.

Death is correct:

7316/1884 CHANNELL WILLIAM - THOMAS - ELIZABETH - CAMDEN

This is the death of William's first spouse, Ann WHITE in 1856 - has to be at least 3 months before the remarriage (Wesleyan) - normally the marriage certificate will record the burial date of the 1st spouse to show 3 months have passed:

1918/1856 CHAMUL ANN - RUFUS - ELIZABETH - CAMDEN

Marriage claimed to be 2 Feb 1832 Hawkchurch, Somerset

Hawkchurch was in Dorset in 1832. Ignoring Hawkchurch and Somerset and using 1832 +/- 5 and not using William's surname I still can't find the marriage.

Can I find an Ann WHITE with parents Rufus and Elizabeth?

This is very weird:

Ann White
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 03 Nov 1812 HAWKCHURCH, DORSET, ENGLAND
residence: Dorset, England
parents: Rufus White, Elizabeth

Mary Ann White
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 06 Mar 1825 Hawkchurch, Dorset, England
residence: Dorset, England
parents: Rufus White, Elizabeth

It is claimed William CHANNELL married:

1. Ann WHITE - 2 Feb 1832

2. Naomi OLIVER (nee FREEMAN) - post #1

3. Mary Ann WHITE in NSW after death of Naomi.

This is claimed to be the death of William's 3rd spouse Mary Ann WHITE:

11987/1895 CHANNELL MARY A - JOHN - SARAH - CAMDEN

Neither John nor Sarah fits.

The death of his 2nd spouse:

3237/1862 CHANNELL NAOMI - RICHARD - MARIA - CAMDEN

This looks like his 3rd marriage:

1713/1862 CHANNEL WILLIAM - BRADLEY MARY ANN - CAMDEN

So, nest question. Is BRADLEY a married or maiden name?

2nd question: Did William really marry Ann's younger sister?

I wonder. Hawkchurch is in that RD.

Marriages Sep 1844
GOVIER George Axminster 10 27 ***
MOORE Joel Axminster 10 27
STREET Eliza Axminster 10 27 ***
WHITE Mary Anne Axminster 10 27

Next question. Did Mary die in Jun 1900 Bucks? Can't find her reg as WHITE or MOORE.

Diving off the deep end here: :2fun:

I looked in 1881 census for a Mary born 1825 +/- 2 Hawkchurch and found a POWELL and a LEMON. :2fun:

Deaths Mar 1860
Moore Joel Axminster 5b 1

Marriages Jun 1864
Bale Mary Ann Whitechapel 1c 669
Goldsmith Harry Whitechapel 1c 669
Lemon George Whitechapel 1c 669
Moore Mary Ann Whitechapel 1c 669

Marriages Dec 1861
Jones Sarah Tenbury 6c 341
Moon Mary Ann Tenbury 6c 341
Moore Mary Ann Tenbury 6c 341
Page Edwin Tenbury 6c 341
POWELL John Tenbury 6c 341

Can rule out POWELL. Mary DAVIS.

One missing:

Marriages Dec 1862
Bugler John Sherborne 5a 797
Moore Mary Ann Sherborne 5a 797
Smith Theresa Bradley Sherborne 5a 797

I'm stuck trying to prove Mary Ann WHITE born 1825 Hawkchurch, Dorset died in Jun Q 1900 in Buckinghamshire.

If Mary's pob is recorded as Hawkchurch in 1881 census then she has to be the spouse of a William not George LEMON. It means a remarriage too. I've checked all deaths for a Mary in Bucks with age 75 +/- 3 years and can't find anything that fits.
