Hello crankypants,

Births
4688/1860 CHANNON HARRY JAMES R ELIZABETH BATHURST
4854/1861 CHANNON EMMALINE JAMES R ELIZABETH BATHURST
4885/1863 CHANNON ALICE JAMES R ELIZABETH BATHURST
5541/1865 CHANNON WILLIAM JAMES R ELIZABETH BATHURST

Deaths
2932/1866 CHANNON HERBERT JAMES ELIZABETH BATHURST
2933/1866 CHANNON EMMELINE JAMES R ELIZABETH BATHURST
2971/1866 CHANNON ALICE JAMES ELIZABETH BATHURST
5438/1882 CHANNON WILLIAM JAMES R ELIZABETH GOULBURN
11773/1883 CHANNON HARRY JAMES R ELIZABETH T ADELONG
2147/1904 CHANNON JOHN JAMES R ELIZABETH MORUYA

Oh, another death with father listed as Robert:

9829/1906 CHANNON FREDERICK ROBERT ELIZABETH T NEWTOWN

So, it looks as though they arrived with not just James and John, the two in the 1851 census, but probably with Elizabeth, Frederick and Herbert also.

Hello crankypants,

Henry W is connected to the NEWBERY so I'm looking at this topic again.

This one can be ruled out:

Births Jun 1859
Channon Henry William Lambeth 1d 281

Deaths Jun 1871
Channon Henry 12 Lambeth 1d 248

This one we have not looked at:

Births Mar 1856
CHANNON Henry William Alford Plymouth 5b 247

I know there is an extra name not seen in Australia in the E/R where it is Henry William only.

I still can't find when he arrived. While I was searching I found this:

John CHANNON Abt 1582 of Coombs, St Mary, Devon, Eng d. 30 Dec 1605
Father: John Channon Mother: Johan UNKNOWN
Spouse: LIVING UNKNOWN :D :D

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Friday 10 December 1858

SHOULD this meet the eye of HENRY CHANNON, son of James Channon, (vet. surg.), Taunton, Somerset, he is requested to write to his cousin Thomas Channon, Adelong Quartz-reef, Tumut, N.S.W.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Now, the question is do I have the right Thomas in my tree?

I have nothing to say my Thomas was a gold miner in Adelong. The one in the ad was a miner at one time and later a magistrate.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 9 May 1896
New Magistrates
...Henry Channon, Frogmore....

This is all I have so far in my database.

Births Dec 1852 Devon
Channon Thomas Tavistock 5b 347

1900 N.S.W Post Office Directory
Channon T. fruiterer, Milton

Death # 96/1927 CHANNON THOMAS 75 YEARS SYDNEY SYDNEY

ADDITION:

I have nothing to prove that birth is the correct one and nothing to prove who his parents are since they are not listed on his death reg.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Yes, YES :D :D

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 19 February 1898
IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW SOUTH WALES.-Probate Jurisdiction.-In the Will of JEAN (or JANE) VICTORIA CHANNON, late of Frogmore, in the colony of New South Wales, Married Woman, deceased.-Applcation will be made after fourteen days from the publicition hereof that Probate of the last Will of the abovenamed deceased may be granted to HENRY CHANNON, the Executor named in the said Will. WHITE and WOLSTENHOLME, Proctors for Applicant, 121 Pitt street, Sydney.

One word "Frogmore" ties it all together. First spouse - Jean Victoria LANG.

Hello crankypants,

There is a problem. A rather large problem. The Henry in my tree is no way near old enough. If he arrived Dec 1858 - the date of all the ads - then he is unlikely to have come alone in his teens or younger. And father = James of Taunton does not seem to fit either

Oh, Jean Victoria LANG was born in 1838 !!!! So it might fit after all. I do have a bit of hair left to pull out :D

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Are you lost yet ?

I'm going to check Dec 1858 vessels arriving Victoria. Still can't find anything using C*.

It can't be the same Thomas - he would be 6 yo in 1858 if I have the right birth and/or the right death. I have the death in 1927 based on him not being in 1930 E/R and birth date based on age at death. Not much to go on.

Addition: There must be two different CHANNON families because the William Henry who died in Moonie Ponds in 1902 is not mine.
Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Where am I?

It's okay my brain's not absorbing too much after the near death of my precious 'NOTEBOOK'. It had a little accident this afternoon. I dropped it on the ground, fortunately on carpet. I reset the battery and thankgod that did the trick, so far so good.

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Oh I hope it was LUSH pile :D You'd better run a check of the hard disk.

I think perhaps you should ignore the last 6 posts >:D I got myself in a tangle. My Thomas is way too young. He would be 6 years old in 1858 so I doubt he was a gold miner in Adelong.

AND, he didn't arrive until 1859 :2fun:

Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852-1923
CHANON ELIZABETH 30 AUG 1859 'BLACK SWAN' B 167 001
CHANON JAMES 29
CHANON JAMES 10
CHANON JOHN 8
CHANON THOS 6
CHANON FREDC 5
CHANON EDITH 2
CHANON ---- I (Infant) [Herbert]

It now looks as though there are two very different CHANNON families in Australia. So I should restate the query.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Ok, starting again. This is what I know:

Marriage 1: # 3361/1879 CHANNON HENRY WILLIAM LANG JEAN VICTORIA ADELONG

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 9 May 1896
New Magistrates
...Henry Channon, Frogmore....
1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll – Werriwa Division - Frogmore Polling Place
CHANNON Henry (Storekeeper)
CHANNON Elizabeth Jane (Domestic Duties)
Death # 3908/1921 CHANNON HENRY W JOHN J - BOOROWA
All I can add is that Henry arrived before 1879. I thought of 1861 census look up for John but considering Jean Victoria was born in 1838 perhaps Henry is much older that I first thought and a 1841 look up might be better. Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

See previous post - he was born about 1832 if age at death is correct.

So, thanks. It is something to work with.

Hello crankypants,

His father may have died by 1841. Damn it, we need to find him in the shipping records.

You are probably right. At least I found something to add to the database.

Hello crankypants,

I wonder if a mariner would become a store keeper in Frogmore? Perhaps we can't find him in shipping records because he was not an assisted immigrant.

We are stuck.

Dave

Hi Dave

Yes I was thinking similiar. I couldn't see this Henry in 1871 & 1881, could have been at sea.
Searched the aussie mariners sea site to see if he was a crew member but no luck.
Is it worth getting his death certificate.

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Yes, no sign in shipping records.

There would be others to go on the list before that one. I average about one a month so it would be ages before I'd get to it.

Dave

Hello,

I'd like a look up please for a different transcript of this census:

1861
Liskeard
Thomas Channon, 55, innkeeper, b. Devonshire Devonport
Sarah, 59, b. Torquay
Emaline M, 23, b. Exeter
Ellen, 21, b. Falmouth
Alfred Rowe, 13, nephew b. Poplar

And a look up in 1871 for Thomas please. Sarah won't be there:

Deaths Jun 1868
Sarah Channon Liskeard 5c 43

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave
