Hello,

Deaths Sep 1870
Channon James 67 Taunton 5c 285

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Friday 10 December 1858
SHOULD this meet the eye of HENRY CHANNON, son of James Channon, (vet. surg.), Taunton, Somerset, he is requested to write to his cousin Thomas Channon, Adelong Quartz-reef, Tumut, N.S.W.
James is the brother of Thomas (m. Anne PAKENHAM) born abt 1805 Devonport, Devon.

From age at death James was born about 1803 possibly also Devon. Son Henry I'd guess was born about 1835 and was in Victoria by Dec 1858.

I don't know who James married. Please see if James and family can be found in census.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. So it looks as though Thomas died 1861-1871. I can't see a death in Cornwall.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. This is probably the marriage:

Spouse: Mary Ann BELCH
Marriage: 2 Aug 1833 Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, England

No sign of any of the children in IGI.

Now, the question is with CHANNON grandchildren did James & Mary have more than one son? If not then those are children of Henry & ??? So did Henry arrive in Victoria with spouse and children? No, I'd say Henry arrived single.

Any luck with James and/or son Henry in 1851?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

No marriage to an Eliza in Victoria before 1st born in 1854. I'd say they married in England.

Did Thomas Channon migrate before the 1871 census or is he still missing in 1871, or died?.

Back with James.

cheers

Hello crankypants,

I'd say Thomas Snr, (later the innkeeper) brother of James did not migrate. I think Henry arrived in Victoria in Dec 1858 single and probably married there. I also guess the 'General Surgeon' who married Eliza could be another son of James, John James.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Yes, I agree with that and the marriage.

I wonder if I had the right marriage for James & Mary Ann. If John was born 1829 then perhaps there is a more likely marriage before that. There is this one:

Spouse: Mary HAMMET
Marriage: 9 Jul 1829 Northam, Devon, England

But I think the Mary Ann one in Ottery is more likely.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

:D That 1833 marriage is looking sick.

Turning to the other half of the family. Please see if you can find a Thomas born abt 1835 in 1851. He is not with his father Thomas (Innkeeper) in 1851. I doubt he arrived in Australia before 1851.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Submitted not extracted:

Spouse: Mary Ann BLACKMORE
Marriage: 18 Jan 1825 St Gregory's, Dawlish, Devon, England

It would help if a death reg in Victoria has his mother's name :D

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I don't have much on Thomas Snr. Three census all say born about 1805 Devonport, Devon. Living in Liskeard with new spouse Sarah in 1851 & 1861. I don't know his parents names.

Thomas Channon was a sergeant in the 94th Regiment of Foot at the time of his marriage [to 1st spouse Anne] in Gibraltar in 1829.
Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I think I'll get a full look up of CHANNON in Vic. BMD.

I looked at the Thomas and the 1834 one but can't be with parents Charles & Mary at St Andrew. Census says 1835 or 1836 so we are stuck. It's not the 1829 one because he was born in Somerset.

CHANNON Thomas, 1836 age 5 Somerset

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I just looked in the National Archives and didn't see a discharge from the 94th for Thomas, Snr.

I did see a Thomas CHANNON discharged in 1811 who had served in the Devon Militia for over 30 years and who was born at Ottery.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

The 94th was raised in Glasgow in 1623 and served in a variety of settings during the colonial period.

Disbanded in 1818 and raised again in 1823. They were first stationed in the Mediterranean, on garrison duty at Gibraltar and Malta. In 1834 they moved to India where they remained for 15 years.

Thomas was a Sergeant in 1829 in Gibraltar when he married Anne PAKENHAM.

I'm surprised I didn't find his discharge.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave.

I've just recenly joined and stumbled accross your posts and others concerning the Channon's. I am a Channon from South Africa, and I have in my possesion a huge family bible which has notations in it dating back to 1863Dec 23 when a one William Henry Channon was born at Blanford Dorsetshire,
raised at Plympton St Mary, Devonshire, England.
Came to South Africa in 1878 at age 15yrs.
Joined Cradock District Police on 7th January 1880
Married the widow Maryann Ritchie on 17th September 1885, born "Smith" on the 13 January 1864 in the Cowie District of Bedford, Cape Colony.
Later Transfered to Town Police on 1st October 1887
I am not sure if this has any bearing on the W H Channon that your looking for, in any event if not maybe there is someone out there who has any info relating to my tree, it will be welcomed with open arms.

Regards

Wayne.

Hello Wayne,

welcome to FHUK.

I'm not sure if it's the same one or not. Either way some more searching can be done and it may help one of us. ;)

Regards,

Dave
