I have an ancestor born Charles Brown Burgess 1846/7 born in Glos (possibly Charlton Kings or Cheltenham) to Charles Burgess & Elizabeth Evans.

The father himself was born in Marylebone. Middlesex, 6 Aug 1814, and mother Elizabeth Evans b 1813 Barton Risien, Glos, tho they were married 12 June 1838 in Parish church of St George, Hanover Square. (their first child was born 1839 in Marylebone, but subsequent children in Glos.

Whilst I have successfully found Elizabeth Evans parents, I have never been sure of the parents of Charles Burgess (snr). I wondered if their son Charles Brown Burgess had the clue in his middle name?

Could anyone find the parents of Charles Burgess Sr born 1814 in Marylebone, Middlesex please? (and hopefully any siblings)

Hi

I wonder if this the 'Brown' connection:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Charles Burgess
Spouse: Ann Brown
9 Aug 1813
Parish: St Marylebone
Borough: Westminster

I've found about 10 trees but none even list the parents as Charles & Ann, so no help that way.

Thanks Geoff, that certainly looks a good reason, doesn't it? and the marriage is the right date since Charles was born 1814.

Is is possible to go back even further to find Grandfather Charles Burgess and Ann Brown's births? Do you know if Charles had any other children besides Charles (1814)?

Yeah, speculative I agree, a few go for William & Ann, though it was the 'Brown' that caught the eye.

There's also a Charles and Ann Manton in 1813

Geoff

Edit: That should be Stanton, not Manton..

I rather think it must be Ann Brown. The original Charles Brown Burgess actually had a brother Charles (just to confuse the issue) who died in 1842 in Cheltenham, two years after he was born, so the parents may have called him Charles Brown to differentiate them.

It may be a bit too speculative without confirming the marriage to Ann Brown is the correct one.

I can't see any more offspring, though had a quick look on the IGI and there are a couple on there.

I know it is speculation, but my Mum's middle name was Westlake, and that proved to be the names of family further back.

I really don't know how else I can prove it's the right parents?

I found the image of the marriage..

Charles was a bachelor and Ann a spinster, no indication either was a minor.

Witnesses:
W Gray, William Robinson and (looks like) Ellen Pink/Jink.

Hi

Not going to be easy, need another clue. As Dave pointed out there aren't even any trees that may offer a clue

And the thought of looking for Ann Brown

One to sleep on for ideas I think..

Dave that person in Mundia who has the big tree, has all my details down to my late brother - he's not even related!!!!!

I don't think I'll get any further Geoff. IGI & Family Search didn't even know Burgess!

Interesting...
London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Alfred Westlake
Born abt 1862
Age: 24
Spouse: Emma Burgess
Spouse Age: 18
3 Oct 1886
Parish: St Mark, Marylebone Road
Borough: Westminster
Father Name: George Westlake
Spouse Father Name: John Burgess

I notice there is a James Ward Burgess, can't find his birth except for:
Q1 1858
Burgess Male Cheltenham 6a 368

And death:
Q4 1893
Burgess James Ward 35 Cheltenham 6a 309

I wonder if Ward is significant
