Births Jun Qtr 1880 BURTON Emily Elizabeth - Birmingham 6d 162 mmn MULLARD

Dave
Hi Dave, I am helping my cousin research her family tree (she is 70+ and new to it) and noticed you also are following the same people. Helen is the great grandaughter of Dr Charles Frederick Burton and his wife Emily Mullard. We believe their 2nd daughter Lilian Burton (Helen's grandmother) was born in the UK before they came to Australia but can find no record of Lilian's birth or shipping records showing when they came to Australia. We also have the census from 1881 showing their daughter Emily Elizabeth born in 1880. I am guessing she died but again can find no record to confirm same. I do know she had died before 1909 when her sister Lilian died tragically. Trove suggests Lilian was 24 when she died suggesting a birth year of circa 1885 but I think she was maybe a year or two older given her brother was born in 1885. We have traced the birth records of their 3 sons born South Australia in 1885, 1887 and 1889. Unfortunately, there is a black whole between 1881 (UK) and 1885 (Aust). I did find this morning that Charles first registered as a Doctor on 3 Dec 1884 so I am thinking they didn't leave the UK till around that time.
I wonder if you would be happy to tell me your interest in Charles and Emily?
I only discovered this website just now and after I receive your reply with let Helen know it may be a resource to help her in her search. This is Helen's maternal family history. I am related on her father's side.

With thanks
Libby (Sydney)

Hello Libby and welcome to the Forum.

This is a very remote branch of my large tree. I'm not directly related. Connects by this marriage.

8756/1913 LITTEN JAMES G - EASTMAN ARABELLA S - SYDNEY * 23 Aug

If I can't find the answers then other members here will be willing to try and help fill the gaps.

I have not tried to trace any of the children who arrived in 1884. A bit curious as I only have these three.

Births Jun 1880 BURTON Emily Elizabeth - Birmingham 6d 162 mmn MULLARD
Births Dec 1881 BURTON Robert Samuel - King's N. 6c 438 mmn MULLARD
Births Dec 1883 BURTON Caroline Mary - Malling 2a 607 mmn MULLARD

One more son and one more daughter ?? Emily was a spinster so no children from an earlier marriage.
Charles was a bachelor when they married 22 Sep 1878.

I can find no birth in SA for a son before the birth of Frederic William.

I think one more birth for a son and for Lilian must have been in England although not found on GRO.

Hi Dave,
It is my understanding that Charles and Emily only had 2 children before coming to Aust. You have Emily Elizabeth above born in the UK. I am looking for Liilian next who I think was also born in the UK. After that they had 3 sons in Aust being Robert Samuel, Frederick William and Henry Theodore.
Hope this adds a little to your family tree

Robert Samuel was almost 31 when he enlisted in WW1 in 1916 making him born in 1885/1886.

Dave,
Charles came to Australia chasing the Gold Rush however that didn't prove a hit so he returned to the UK where he then trained to be a doctor. I have found the shipping record also when he came the first time but not when they came to stay
