Hi there,

I am looking for a marriage between Charles Rabbets and Mary/Mary Ann.
They are shown in the 1851 England Census. Charles born Tollard Royal, Wiltshire; Mary born Edinburgh, Scotland. He was an agr lab.
Charles was born 1815. Mary was born about 1825.

If anyone can help me here, I would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Jackie

P.S. There is a marriage in Bristol for Charles Rabbets and Mary Gurd, but I am not sure if that is the right one. I cannot find Charles anywhere in Bristol in his lifetime.

Hi Jackie,

I found the same marriage as you. People did move around then when looking for work, so perhaps it took Charles to Bristol.

In 1861 theres a Charles Rabbetts born abt 1816 head occ ag lab born Tolland Royal living in the civil parish of Shaftesbury Holy Trinity address Haines Lane with him is George son born abt 1851 born Cann Dorset and Maria Rabbetts sister born abt 1808 born Ashmore Dorset occ housekeeper.

Also there is a Mary Ann Rabbets living in thre civil parish of Bridgewater address St. John Street head married age 30 occ dressmaker/school mistress born Edinburgh with her are:-

Frederick Charles son age 7 born Shaftesbury Dorset
Lavinina Eva dau age 2 born Shaftesbury
Julianne dau age 1 born Winchhead Somerset

Hi there,

I know that Charles and Mary Ann seem to separate during their lifetime, whether it was to be permanent I am not sure. However, Mary Ann kept the younger children, while George, the eldest son went with his father Charles after the death of his mother in 1865 in Bridgwater.
What bugs me, is that there is a child by the name of John Gould aged 6 in the 1851 census, living with both Mary Ann and Charles and listed as a son.
Could Mary have become pregnant in Scotland and sent to England in disgrace? Or was he an adopted child? Or did the father of John Gould die and Mary then marry Charles?

Charles did move around a lot during his lifetime, from Tollard Royal to perhaps Bristol, to Somerset, back to Shaftesbury, and to Fordingbridge. In 1881 census he is listed as "Farmer out of a farm" - Do you know what this means?

Regards
Jackie

Jackie,

I dont really know know what farmer out of farm means, could be that he wasnt on the farm when the census was taken, or that he was out of work or that he didnt work on any particular farm.

Was just wondering whether Gurd and Gould are the same surname if it sounded the same when spoken with a different dialect.
