ANDERSON Robert head 1816 age 35 upholster Lancashire Preston
ANDERSON Eliza wife 1817 age 34 Cheshire Northerich (could be Northwich)

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. The 'Chorlton' and 'upholsterer' both fit nicely.

Still can't find when Charles arrived.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

There were two more children born after Esther:

Alfred b. Q1 1855 Chorlton
Eliza b. Jul 1856 Chorlton

Please see what remains of the family you can find in 1861.

Thanks.

I don't know yet if either of them came to Australia.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Not having any luck finding the Andersons in 1861, not even one of them.

However I did find a death of Esther Anderson. (note I.G.I two Esther’s).

Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries
Manchester Times (Manchester, England), Saturday, November 27, 1852; Issue 425

DEATH
On the 20th inst, aged 19 months, Esther, the infant daughter of Mr. Robert Anderson, upholsterer, Oxford-street, Chorlton-Upon-Medlock.

This may be Robert's father's death in 1847 (Robert Anderson b. 2 Dec 1815 c. 3 Jan 1816 Saint John, Preston, Lancashire, England - Robert & Elizabeth).

Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries
The Preston Guardian etc (Preston, England), Saturday, January 30, 1847; Issue 1796

DEATH
On Thursday week, aged 64, Mr. Robert Anderson, upholsterer, Manchester, formerly of this town.

And you guessed it I can't find him in 1841 census.

Will keep looking.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you.

DEATH On Thursday week
:D

Yes, the second Esther was given the middle name Wilkinson.

Still can't find any trace of Charles. I've checked for arrival in NSW, Qld and Victoria in each of the three state sites that list assisted immigrants.

Looks like Alfred and Eliza may have stayed in England.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

Yes, all I can say is Charles arrived between 1845 and 1874.

Robert b. 1815 and Eliza married in Eccles in 1839 but I have Robert George c. 7 May 1843 All Saints, Manchester as the first born.

I wonder where they were in 1841?

Esther married and died quite young:

Surname: WILLIAMS
Given Names: Esther Wilkinson
Event: D
***: F
Spouse Surname/Father: Anderson Robt
Spouse Gvn Names/Mother:
Age: 36
Age Code:
Birth Place:
Death Place: E Melb
Year: 1890
Reg. Number: 12733

Hi Dave

Just been looking through the Victoria BDM database criteria's and there is one marriage for a Esther ANDERSON with the married surname of WILLIAMS
in 1881.

1841 census Robert & Eliza (page 3 1st post).

My theory is if Robert & Eliza died before the 1861 census three of their children Robert, Emma, Esther and possibly Alfred & Eliza may be with an uncle or aunty (looking for a married name).
Were these children mistranscribed in 1861.???
Charles Thomas ANDERSON may of left England before 1861 census.

In 1861 there is a Richard ANDERSON b. 1813 Preston living in Chorlton-Upon-Medlock and his occupation is Upholster. Possibly a brother of Robert b. 1816.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you for looking further.

1841 census Robert & Eliza (page 3 1st post).
 Ah, yes. No children.

There is no sign of a death in Victoria for Alfred or Eliza.

Possible:
Deaths Dec 1855
Anderson Alfred Chorlton 8c 336

Possible:
Deaths Dec 1856
ANDERSON Eliza Chorlton 8c 314
Deaths Sep 1858
ANDERSON Eliza Chorlton 8c 307

Hard to say with four of them in Australia and Charles being the only one to marry in and live in NSW to say if he arrived before or after the others in 1864. Yes, both parents could have died by 1861 but there should be 3 or 4 of them there somewhere.

Dave

Hi Dave

Guess what their father Robert did come out to Australia.

http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=54

Robert Anderson Upholsterer South Melb 19 Oct 1889

The will of Robert Anderson – Montaque Street, South Melbourne
Sons Robert Anderson, Charles Thomas Anderson
Daughters Emma Abbott, Esther Wilkinson Williams
Executors of will son Robert Anderson, son-in-law John Abbott
Last two items been digitised for viewing.

So I wonder now did Charles T come out to Australia with his father Robert.

"Well, well, well" :D

Thank you very much. I will now search for a Robert with a young Charles.

Hello crankypants,

Still no luck. There are a number of Robert ANDERSON but none born within 5 years of his birth date. Also, considering his age it is unlikely he was assisted, but that doesn't help me either. If he came into Sydney unassisted then it will be almost impossible to find him without knowing either the year or the vessel.

Dave

Hi Dave

Your right if he came out as unassisted passenger you've got no hope in finding him.:'(

I found Robert in 1865 & 1866 also another one for Charles in 1873 Sands Directory.

Sands Directory N.S.W 1865
ANDERSON Robert, upholsterer, Crown-street

Sands Directory N.S.W 1866
ANDERSON Robert, upholsterer, 363 Crown st.

Sands Directory N.S.W 1873
ANDERSON Charles, upholsterer, 91 Palmer st.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you. That 1873 one for Charles is one year before he married.

Robert Jnr did arrive in Sydney with 2 sisters in 1864 but I wonder if those entries are for him or his father? Probably him because I suspect Charles and his father came as unassisted to Sydney in or just before 1873. And, I wonder when the both Robert's went to Victoria??

Dave

Hi Dave

That was going to be my next question.

Was Robert jnr an Accountant and did he marry in 1874 to Rachel M. There is a will for her in 1910. (Rachel M ANDERSON 14 Sept 1910 Toorak).

If so it would have to be between 1866-1873?

Hello crankypants,

Thank you. Yes, for sure.

:D That throws my idea out!!

Reg# 140
Surname: ANDERSON
Given Names: Robert
Event: M
Spouse Surname/Father: EDWARDS
Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Rachel Mary
Age:
***: M
Birth Place: MANCHESTER
Death Place:
Year: 1873
Reg Number: 140

If this Robert was never an upholsterer then the 1865 & 1866 entries are for the father !!!!!! So he didn't arrive in 1873 with Charles as I thought as unassisted.

Dave
