Mentioned in Despatches,
Catalogue ref WO372/1,
Place A Alezu-Barnes CE,

May have got the Meritorious Medal East Africa and Victoria medal.

registered paper 0137/5353,
(underneath this is written)
68/Regt No 37 1/11/55.

There is also a Red stamp mark with this info

Application for replacement

We have tried to find this chap and cant find anything from 1912 when he married Cecil Violet Enid Greville.
Did he live and collect an Army pension, has he got children, where did he reside Africa/UK/Australia ?????

And what was his fathers name.

Hi Ben
Charles Walmer Ascroft b about 1894 has dissapeared and since 1913 nothing definite has been heard about him.
A Charles Walmer Ascroft had a WW1 military record, serving in the ASC,but we dont know if this was him for definite.
The other thing of importance is verifying his Fathers real name, was it Otto Simon Henry Harcourt b1848/9,a lot has been indicated but no real proof.
Otto was the son of George Simon Harcourt of Ankerwycke b1807.
Otto was the eldest son of the second marriage to Gertrude Lucas and he may have died Nov 1915,Milburn,Australia.

Absolute confirmation is needed that Otto Simon Henry Harcourts son was Charles Walmer Ascroft.

Thanks.

Hi Ascroft

What relation are you to Charles Walmer Ascroft?

Emigration records from South Africa may need to be consulted to see if he left the port.

Hi Ascroft

I have just looked on Ancestry.coms UK incoming passenger lists to the UK 1876-1960 but couldnt find a likely match for Charles either under Ascroft of Harcourt.

Anothe option is to ask family members to see if they know anything.

The Army may have pension details of him. Is ASC his regiment?

Hi Ben
Interesting, may prove a point that Charles Walmer Ascroft never actually came to the UK.
Unless he came under a different name such as Greville.
There was talk in one of the Harcourt families details that Otto Simon Henry Harcourts son went missing while prospecting (if this is Ascrofts father??),is it possible he went to Australia or Canada.
This point of Charles Walmer Ascroft coming to the UK from 1913 to 1960 is of real importance and has consequences that can prove there is a cover up to a mystery involving a lost Heir of an important Barony.
Regards

Hi Ascroft

If he died in England, his surname may have been registered under Ascroft or Harcourt. It is a case of looking under both names. The indexes are only online up to around 1925-1930 then it is a case of searching through the actual images. They should do what they have done with the birth indexes by electronically indexing the death registers up to present day to save trundling through pages of scanned images.

Charles Walmer Ascroft was not present in 1927 when his wife Cecil Violet Enid Ascroft (nee Greville) got a divorce absolute.
One week after the Divorce Cecil Violet Enid Ascroft married secondly Air Vice Marshall Edward Irvine Bussell CBE RAF.
Cant find any trace of Charles Walmer Ascroft since 1912/13.

OOPs this message took its time to appear,so rewrote.

Re: Charles Walmer Harcourt Ascroft ASC WWI/M in D.

There is a possibilty that Charles Walmer Harcourt Ascroft remained in Africa to serve in the British land forces during the 1914-18 war.
His wife Cecil Violet Enid (Greville) Ascroft came back to the UK and she worked in the War Office HQ London with her father Brooke Soutwell Greville Kings Messenger and other relatives.
Its during this time in London 1915 she conceived her son Peter Charles Algernon Greville Ascroft, she was sent away from London and her son was born June 1916 at Longfield House,Wrayesbury the home of her husbands cousin Captain Guy Elliot Harcourt,Lord of Ankerwycke Wrayesbury.
Its believed the son was the child of Cecil Violets uncle Baron Greville, they both lived in Knightsbridge,London, worked and socialised together but the uncle was married and had a male heir,so rather embarrassing to say the least in those days.
She was put to a grand house to give birth to her son Peter at Longfield,Wraysbury and at the age of 4 her son was placed into top public boys schools until the age of 17,while she went back to socialising in London.
Cecil Violet Enid Greville then married a second time in 1927 to Air Vice Marshall Edward Irvine Bussell CBE RAF.
Its possible Charles Walmer Harcourt Ascroft came back to the UK after the War and found his wife had had a child and then dissappeared,we dont know.
Peter Charles Algernon Greville Ascroft was told the truth in 1948/9 and he then used his real name of Peter Charles Algernon Fulke Greville.
Another scenario is that Charles Walmer Harcourt Ascroft in 1913 aged just 17 was left shares in the Blaauwbank Gold Mines,Magliesburg,Africa and someone stole them off him and he was made to dissappear.
Interesting because either way their is a male heir to two great family dynasties, the Warwick Grevilles and the Harcourts.
The Lucan family was also related to these families and the likeness of the males to one another is uncanny.
Lord Lucan was the splitting image of Peter Charles Fulke Greville.Peters favourite cousin was Deidre Maxwell-Scott whose family Lord Lucan went to on the night of the murder in 1974.
Peter Fulke Greville has 5 children the eldest being Christopher Brooke Fulke Greville b 1951.
